Launch areas near Paignton

Post by LJColeman » 12 Jun 2019, 10:31

Hello all,

I am after some advise on where i can lauch my SIB whilst on holiday,

I am staying in Paignton in a log cabin next week & i have recently purchased a 3.3M Sib & Outboard, I've never used it & haven't taken it out of the box yet.

Im in 2 mind whether to take it on holiday with me or not next week as i am unsure on where i can launch my SIB (I am a novice to Sib'ing) I would like somewhere where its not too busy as it will be my first time launching the boat. I also dont want to go to far out to sea etc as i will have my 1 year old boy & Mrs with me.

Any advise to a novice would be great.

Thank you

Hi Lewis,

Take a look at https://www.boatlaunch.co.uk/ as it lists slip ways around the country.

This is a screen shot from there showing the slips in that area

With your setup I would say a day or two on the Dart would be in order! :)
With your experience level and passengers I would stick to the rivers and harbours for now.
Not a complete idiot - some parts are missing.

Excellent thank you I shall take a look,

I am no novice to the see, (I have a Ring 21 offshore powerboat) but normally when on the water I have 200hp behind me.

I have never been on the see with only 4hp so not sure what to expect really. I think I may try the Dart first, which slip way is the less hassle and easy to park the car?

I did think about launching at Brixham and pottering round to Churston cove. Is this achievable in my little Sib & will 6L of fuel be enough?

Thanks again for the help

A ring 21, very nice. Back in 2013 and 2014 I used to regularly use A Honda Formula Four Stroke series powerboat, they are great fun.

I’m struggling to find Churston cove on the chart, which direction and roughly how many Nm’s is it from Brixham?

What size outboard do you have and is it 2 or 4 stroke? As a guide last month I did a 30 nautical mile day trip and used just over 12 litres with a 9.8 2 stroke on a 3.4m sib. A friend did the same trip with me and he used 6 litres in his 15hp 4 stroke (I was running close to wide open throttle most of the day, he was on less than half throttle).

The 5 and 10 litre plastic fuel cans with the screw on flexi spouts make excellent reserve fuel cans for sibs.

Just spotted you have a 4hp 2 stroke. I’m guessing it has a 1 litre internal tank and you are taking a 5 litre can. Six litres of fuel will be fine. Remember that with only 4hp tidal streams will have a big effect on your speed over ground. Running against the tide, especially if it’s springs, will take considerably more time and use lots more fuel. With a 200hp you never have to think about tidal streams, but with 4hp you will.

Hi Chris,

Thank you for your reply's. You are correct i am used to a little more horse power behind me so ive never had to take consideration to amount of fuel & tidal streams etc.

I am thinking of getting a 10L plastic fuel can to carry with me to be safe. Ill have plenty of 2 stroke premixed then also.

If you look at google maps & search for Churston cover it is literally just round the corner from the Harbour, I am unsure on how many NM but i am hoping it would be okay & not too rough in the SIB.

Pictures of map attached.

Under one NM each way. You should get there and back on 1 litre.

The 10 litre Jerry cans are very useful. I have three of them.
