Re: Shopping
hey Roy, the RYA boat angling explained is one of the coolest RYA books i've seen in a while, we can sell it to people directly or you can see the 'ebook' online here: https://www.rya.org.uk/shop/Pages/produ ... ined-ebook.

Re: Shopping
Steve,
Posts are there to jump on.
Depending on type 3kg should be more than ample. We only use a 2.5kg Bruce type on our rib, and it’s fine for day anchorage. As said before it’s the chain and sufficient warp doing the work to keep anchor set.

Re: fishing. Last year all I had was a rod and some feathers and I caught loads of Mackerel and a Bass. It can be as easy or as complex as you like.

Re: Shopping
I use a 1kg Bruce with my sib and a 2kg Bruce with my rib. The only type of anchor that I never trust are the grapnel ones, they very rarely set correctly however heavy they are.

Re: Shopping
Ref anchors...I've never been a fan of grapnel anchors in the past as struggled to get them to set but recently I've been working on two boats that use grapnels in different locations and not had a problem. Not sure that i'm doing anything different with the actual anchor but guess I do pay out a lot more chain and line now. In the past when using grapnels it was early days in boating and didn't realise how much chain/line should be used. Admittedly on one of the boats with the grapnel anchor its so ridiculously big that I can barely lift it so not sure it even needs to set! Still not my first choice of anchor though and both boats being commercial had other anchors on board if needed.
Please feel free to ask questions about training & RYA qualifications, if you're not local we will try to point you in the right direction!

Re: Shopping
I have an Ugly Stik rod (20-30lbs) and a spinning reel loaded with 20lbs line. I bought some readymade rigs from Go Outdoors and a couple of weights.
I then just headed out into the Solent, found a quiet spot and drifted with the tide.
If mackerel are around you will catch them - they are stupid and will eat anything that moves.

Re: Shopping
That method of attaching the chain to the tripping end and securing the chain to the proper end of the anchor with cable ties has always worried me. If the cable ties snap the anchor will unset itself and drag.
