When I have used a sib to fish I have found that when drifting they are prone to drifting with the wind rather than with the tide (you want to drift with the tide).
This is because SIBs tend sit on top of the water and only have a small profile below the water.

To try and stop this you can use a drogue which looks like an underwater parachute.
This increases your underwater profile and allows the tide to control your drift.

By tying off to different points of the boat you can make you boat drift bow into the tide, of side on.

I have even used one at anchor to stop the sib yawing about and keep everything in line.

The main thing is to remember is to pull the drouge in before motoring off, otherwise.... PING!

You can make your own from a big ikea bag, or builders bag, or buy one like these...

The pic below shows the setup, along with a retrieval line which I have started using.
When you pull this it inverts the drouge and makes it much easier to pull in before motoring back up the tide.

I don't use a sea anchor (or drouge) on my frib but I use one a lot when fishing from my sup. I just pull it out the water using just one of its chords so it collapses. Being a sail maker I just make my own. They really are very useful and also quite a good safety device which could stop you ending up in France due to engine failure.

Just to add my very small penneth worth (only fished for aprox 7-8 years) squid is a very common bait down south and it will snag you most species. Look at what the local area provides in terms of food for those target species and use that bait.

Often a cocktail of rag tipped with squid will work a treat but for cod down sarrrf u need a pulley pennel rig or similar and a whole squid or about 10 rag for them to even bother.....oh and a shed load of luck!
Life is like a chocolate bar........
If you hold onto it for too long u get covered in sh☆t so......
live a life you will remember, not a life full of untested dreams.

You can get a pretty decent fish with a very simple rig.

A special treat for bigger fish is a whole squid, stuffed with 2 or 3 blow lug or rag. Use a bait needle to prepare, add the hook and wrap it with bait cotton to the shank of the hook. Just before you cast or drop, pierce the squid parcel several times with the bait needle and let the juices flow. A belter of a sea bait.

Stray wrote:Wrasse recipe.

Place a house brick in a suitable sized pan, add a chopped red onion, bayleaf, peppercorns, small pinch of salt and a dash of lea n perrins...

place wrasse on top and just cover with water, bring to the boil and simmer for 10 min.

remove wrasse, onion, bayleaf and eat the brick.
I beg to differ !
I caught a cracking wrasse last year on Skye, over 2lbs. Unfortunately when you drag em up from the deeps they often blow their swim bladder and die, as this one did. I took it home, wrapped it in foil with the obligatory lemon and onion and put it in the oven for 20 mins. Bloody lovely, if a bit bony. Cross between white fish and prawn meat, sweet and tasty :thumbsup That said, if I catch them and they don’t die they always go back. One of the bonniest fish in the sea.
