Fish finders

Post by Mitch » 04 Nov 2017, 14:38

The wife has said she will get me a fish finder for Christmas the only thing is which to get so if any of you nice people out there can help me I would be grateful.
I think Paul you were saying a 5" was better mind you the way my eyes are now perhaps a 40" would be good.
Something in the mid price range would be good, not really cheap & not silly money or else she might tell me I've got to go back to work to pay for it.

Garmin echomap chirp 45dv is my choice. Aprox £270 Its a bit more than the lowrance but you get all maps instead of having to buy them and it has structure scan etc. Also a great feature of showing you a cartoon style picture of the ground below the waterline so easier to spot features

Garmin Striker 4CV is my fishing companion Mitch. You don't get maps on it but I have Navionics on my phone for that bit. Quality product and under £200. Near photographic view of the bottom on some settings. (I hate it when they photograph my bottom) The screen is smaller but it has several alarms to help.
I'm not really a Hobbit, just look like one. Real name is "Andy".

Are maps really needed on a sib ? Im a bit of a technophobe lol, seriously though would a fishfinder not do ? I had a plotter in a previous bigger boat and never used it cause i didnt really know how tbh but i really miss not having a sounder

If you want to catch fish maps are vital really unless you know an area very well. You can look for contour changes and depressions or wreck info etc etc etc. And of course you can study all this stuff on dry land with a beer in hand. Plot it and head for it on your next trip out and test your theorys.

Its also handy for buoy info and local issues. You dont get that level of detail on free navionics etc.
