Dark side antifoul question

Post by mattswan2512 » 15 Feb 2017, 15:35

Hi all,
After coming to the conclusion that i can never get the hull looking as new as before her 1 and only antifoul coat without large cost and amounts of work i have decided to re-antifoul. I am also looking to water berth my boat for 3 month of the summer so i can use it whenever without concerns of launch times.

Question is this........
Having never antifouled but wanting to try it myself can i do it on the trailer..... my plan would be to paint all the boat water line down apart from the roller contact patches...... then when dry jack up the back of the boat and place it on axle stands and then slowly pull the trailer forward enough that the contact patches are free to paint.....

Is this a viable option and has anybody done this?

I did exactly this when I Coppercoated my new 21ft Jeanneau Merry Fisher on the trailer.

The outboard was a 115 Suzuki, lifted with a car engine hoist.
The only remaining contact was the bow snubber right at the front.

Its a right pain crawling over the trailer metalwork though!

I've seen numerous posts of guys doing this on a large boating forum however most recommend getting it professionally done afterwards. Not sure what the cost difference is.

Any way of placing it on boat jacks?
Wrote a note said, 'back in a minute'. Bought a boat and I sailed off in it.

Hmmmm may get a price but i got a feeling it wont be cheap. Id like to try it myself 1 for the experience and 2 for the cost saving but if the hassle is not reflected in the cost of getting it done ill give it to the pro's 18ft deep v flat rear boat any rough costs anyone?

Why jack it up? Paint hull as best you can, let antifoul dry, winch boat backwards on trailer 20 to 30 cm, antifoul newly exposed bare bits. The biggest problem will be not getting your trailer and rollers covered in splashes of antifoul.

As a guide timewise, it takes us three days to prepare and then apply two coats of antifoul on our 26ft sailing yacht.

Thats not a bad shout with the winching back chris but im only aloud to do the work in the boats storage place which backs onto the river about 3 ft behind so cant winch it bk but i could launch and recover further bk on the trailer to paint after..... my boat only has 1 coat of antifoul so a quick rub over with a large grit paper and a mask up i should be able to do both coats in a day and finish off the next day in those unpainted patches. I think a hard coat antifoul will be better rather than the bio-degradable as i want this coat to last a fair while.... i want to avoid layer on layer of build up....

We use soft eroding antifoul as we are displacement speed only, and I find anything still left on the hull after 2 years has completely lost it's anti fouling properties (maybe the chemicals go off over time). With a planing speed craft you will need a harder antifoul as the soft stuff would probably just rub off first day out.

Yes now im a 40mph craft i can actualy pull the skin off custard :rofl so need some of the tougher stuff chris. Going for a matte grey....think it will look good once ive give the boat a mop also. Cant wait for summer as boat cleaning is futile in this weather :|

Whatever antifoul you use check with the manufacturer that it's ok to use on a boat to be kept out of the water some of the time. I believe some hard antifoul paints need to be kept wet all the time or they stop working.

Yes good point chris..... i know that the antifoul can dry and crack when out of the water.....i just wish that they never put that bloddy antifoul on in the first place!!!!
