Thinking of buying an action camera.

Post by Martin » 25 Jan 2015, 23:05

Hi guys, I've been looking at action camera's, does anybody have one, if so what make/model and what are your opinions of it?
I looked at gopro, they seem very good, but extortionately priced, are they worth the money?
My interests at the moment lies with the SJCAM 5000 wireless. Any reviews greatly appreciated.

Why do you need one of those Martin?
Do you cycle or rock climb ?

Regards,
Jim.

Hahaaa, no Jim... Me cycling
I'd like one for taking video out in the sib. I think one would be good for fishing, general video of boating things etc.
It's main use will be a dash cam in one of the motors.
I'm just waiting some more reviews of the SJCAM to come out. The sjcam 5000wifi or sjcam 5000+ look like good camera's to me. A lot of bang for the buck if you know what I mean.
I can't justify spending the price of a gopro action cam, although they're allegedly the best, plenty different cams out there now for a lot less money but very similar in spec.

Hi Martin
I can't offer you a great deal of advice on these things but my daughter has a mid range priced £200 Gopro and the things that put me off it is the lack of a tripod/selfie mounting screw built into the camera body so you HAVE to use a Gopro adapter to mount it costing you more money  I also don't like the fact that unless you get a wifi Gopro you can't see what you are filming or focused on and can't view any play-back  so you HAVE to use either your mobile phone or hook up to a computer/TV to do so :!:
I got given a Kitvision action camera for Christmas and this has no wifi however it does have a screen on the back so you can see what you're filming/focused on and view playback. I've yet to use it in anger but just playing around with it, it seems to do anything the her Gopro can do and more AND has a mounting in the camera body to mount on a tripod/selfie stick  It cost about £100 or so BTW.
Had a quick google and youtube look at the models you're looking at and they seem very good for the money and love that they come with a good selection of mountings you can use straight out of the box ;)

Sorry Paul, I hadn't seen your reply.
Yes I agree, The SJCAM 5000wifi really does look the part, I was looking at the SJ4000 a month or so back but the new version looks to have turned up the trickery a bit more.
I'm thrown at the mo, the 5000wifi has a bigger screen and a brighter UI, where as the 5000+ has the smaller screen but a better sensor. I'm just waiting for the guy on YouTube that you pm' me about to do a review on his new 5000+, hopefully then I can make my decision.
Your right about thr pricing too, I was looking at the various pro-go :whistle attachments compared to the interchangeable other makes. There's definitely a substantial saving to be made buying the after-market ones.
Watch this space for updates :cheers

I've got a a gopro3 white which is now 2 models behind and is the cheapest variation. I love it. It's a fantastic little camera, 3rd party 'bits' (including batteries) are very cheap and readily available all around the world and they are almost indestructible.

I'll be getting gopro 4 black for my birthday so I can have one mounted on the outboard cowling and the other on my head.

You can see the videos I've taken here: https://www.youtube.com/user/delta4002/videos

The boating video was taken on my head and on a selfie stick for a short duration. It's a bit dark because I haven't fiddled with the lighting/contrast etc.

Yeh, the GoPro certainly seems to do the business, your video showed that.
It's a huge price for the cam and the extras are also expensive though :shame so i'll be finding something a little nearer my price range
The SJ Cam I was holding out for and hoping to buy has finally been reviewed by a pretty handy chap that does thorough reviews http://www.techmoan.com/
Unfortunately it doesn't seem to have hit the level for me, so I'll be buying the previous SJ4000 Wifi and waiting for the 5000 to sort itself out. :asskick
Reviews below for anyone that wants the info : :D

If it makes any difference I've never bought any of the official extras. Everything I own is around the £2 mark off amazon or ebay and never had any problems with any of them.

That's nice to here Phil, thanks.
The review bloke seems impressed with the fittings etc quality, so I'll be ordering up tonight when the nipper goes to bed.

It looks almost identical to the gopro, it'll be interesting to see your results!
