3D fishfinders

Post by Fishery Pokery » 30 Apr 2020, 16:39

Hi guys,

I have touched on this before but I don’t think I explained what I was asking very well. I have asked Humminbird but not sure if they will get back to me.

It is a question about my ageing 3D fish finder but may apply to more modern 3D sounders too.

If I am steaming forward with the transducer “nose” on pointing the direction I am moving it shows a 3D map of what I have travelled over.

If I am drifting in current, with the boat and transducer side on, what will the screen display?
I think it won’t map correctly as it has several aligned “sounders” in the transducer and I assume that travelling sideways will confuse them as they don’t know what direction they are travelling in.

I’ve attached a pic of the transducer and sounder incase it helps people visualise what I mean.

What do you think?

Thanks for your time,

Does the sounder have gps. If so it shouldn't make any difference.

No, you can put it in using NMEA, but it doesn’t have its own.

I wouldn't have thought it would make a difference to the mapping. You just won't be able to navigate back to an interesting feature without GPS. There is only one way to find out for sure, get in on the water and test it.

Yes, you are probably right Gray.

If I knew one way or the other I could build a transom fitting that I could rotate if drifting side on.

I’m not sure if I explained how it works very well.

The transducer has six sounders inside it, this is how it gives the view of the seabed you can see in the picture above.
Maybe newer side scans work like this?

Thanks
