Suzuki 2hp mini project

Post by PeterM » 27 Oct 2018, 17:04

Picked this up off eBay locally and started to fiddle with it today. All in all in fairly good condition.

Cowl is scratched but purely cosmetic.

Under the cowl all is clean and in order and with the expected paint flaking from old engines. No obvious leaks or issues except fuel leaking from the carb when titled..... not not overly concerned as it holds a tiny amount and stops when I turn the fuel trap off.

Bottom looks fine. Prop off but had to drill the split pin as it was well rusted in. Once off all came off easily..... greased it all up checked the impeller which looked good and back on now..

Missing a few screws from the cowling so some rummaging in the garage and all replaced. Dash of fuel and oil and starts well. As it always in gear it's emptying the bucket quickly so will take it down the river and try it on little friend... Andy's old sib that it is for.

Got a tiller to go on it arriving in a few days and hopefully be a handy little thing to let mates kids use on the river.... but I'll look to fit a proper kill cord first...

Pete,
I've struggled with this on a lot of small OB's.
The problem stems from the fact that the fuel is gravity fed from an on-board tank and when tilted to the up position the float is not able to close the needle valve.
The carb is basically about 80° off vertical.
The handbooks do say to close the fuel tap when tilted up...

Yep. I assumed the carb was just leaking fuel past the valve and one of those things.

Today's issue is I can't start it.. when it's started first pull every other time......

Typical! But part of what I enjoy understanding what's going on....

Wet plug.
The fuel will have evaporated of and left the spark plug with a coat of oil...

Nope.. fuel in there and plug wet.... lost the spark. Starting by pulling the stop switch then look at the other bits.....

Checked stop switch wiring - spark is good , fuel is good , compression is good …( finger over plug hole !) … but now I cant get the thing to start no matter what I do with the choke or throttle setting...

Back to the basics on this one for me !

Very odd as was going first pull until a few days ago !

Good news today. Took the carb off... which on this is 1 bolt! Did he sensible thing and then took of the plastic front plate... 2 screws and 1 bolt for the earth. So very simple.

Stripped all the bits out of the carb and sat them in carb cleaner all afternoon. Put it all back together and splashed out on a new plug. A few pulls to fill the carb bowl and it sprang into life. :)

I had tried with easy start and it went fine so knew it could only be the carb... the new plug was just to lavish live on it... tiller handle on and ready to go! Although remembrance Sunday means it's staying home on Sunday.
