Boston Whaler Montauk 170 (2011)

Post by 9-R » 20 Oct 2016, 17:46

Our search for a Boston Whaler Montauk seemed like a very long journey even though it was only for two months. So much had gone into that narrow time frame that it had felt like a year went by.

We truly enjoyed our SIB and all of the wonderful excursions it meant for us however with a growing family, we knew we were going to have to look for an alternative. We extensively searched for larger SIBs, bigger engine options and hopefully a RHIB, but they were rare to our area.

We wanted something that got us into the shallow waters of the local rivers but yet could venture out into the Bay at the coast or some of the larger surrounding lakes. It would need to be light to transport and easy to manage. To keep the cost within our means, I knew we’d have to look to our local area’s preference which was a hard-shell boat. It needed to be small so the search might be difficult to find exactly what we needed.

We first looked into aluminum hulls with the plan to convert it into a family friendly vessel however the wife wasn’t too keen on the ‘hardness’ of the boat and I began to see her point. We then came across a local ad for a classic Montauk 17.

Read up on its specifications, abilities and seating arrangements and it fit the bill. Had come across other really good condition Montauks but it always felt like the sellers were toying with us and just kept us out of reach. We grew very frustrated with the experience especially when dealing with the classic models and their sellers.

We looked at the newer model 170 but to fit within our price range, we were looking at the earlier introduction years. To our dismay, we found that the ’02 to ’06 years had a Merc four-stroke engine with a Yamaha head and carb that continuously clogged and was a maintenance issue. Didn’t want the threat of my family left stranded anywhere so we were forced to consider later years that were way out of our price range. Even tried to purchase one many states away but the process got too complicated and the costs were adding up. At one point we stumbled across a very well done scam that included quite a few individuals and thankfully we wised up to it just in time. Been trying to keep others from falling victim ever since.

It was then that we were blessed with a 2011 170 model presented before us and an incredible deal from a legitimate seller. We negotiated right away, worked out the paperwork and made a mad dash, several hours away, to pick it up.

It was in mint condition and extremely well cared for by the previous owner. He had even kept the original tags that were cut off from the engine from when it was first sold.

The only minor, unfortunate part was that since the seller ordered the fishing package, it didn’t come with the bow rails which we really wanted. It also has a live well in the rear which may be a bonus for others but takes up precious deck space for it's size.

The biggest shock was the fact that it came with disc brakes on the trailer. Very unusual for this size of boat and the seller had them custom installed.

The engine is the standard model they include which is a Mercury 90hp EFI with a Vengeance stainless steel prop. The seller had installed a 19ga gas tank in lieu of the two 6ga tanks that they normally come with.
6000000003.jpg
The seller also opted a ski-tow tripod which quickly attaches near the transom.

We're anxious for the maiden voyage as we consider our seating and bow rail options.

I started looking for a bow rail right away. No one sold an aftermarket version like they do for the classics so I called Boston Whaler Dealership's to get pricing and I've also reached out to several local companies that can make custom railings to our liking.

Up until 2013, the bow rail included a wide section across the front that was not supported.

I had read about owner's concerns with the flimsiness of this design. Found that the 2014 model year presented and option for a split rail allowing easier front loading and more support. I then reached out to the dealers again and it is available for purchase. I've sent the design to the custom fabricators to see what their capabilities are.

Congratulations on finding 'the one' at last  a very tidy and clean/well cared for boat I'd say 8-)
The braked trailer is a bonus for sure and I'd definitely would go for the bow split rail option if it were mine, the other rail would be a 'non starter' for me for so many reasons
Looking forward to reading more :cheers

Whalers are fantastic boat and last a very long time too. You will probably be able to hand it down to you kids one day. The 90 HP outa make that boat fly too. Huge congrats!

Thanks guys! Ordered new registration numbers in the Boston Whaler font and slant. They expedited the order so I hope it comes in time to take it out this weekend. If not, going to have some very disappointed kiddos!

It's been interesting how well the BW's hold their value. '70s thru '90s models that cost the same as a later version because the owner took good care of it.

We were interested in the Classic Montauk, not just for the value but because the ones we were looking at, included a rear aft bench seat that maximized the layout. Ours makes this more difficult with the addition of the live well. We have some temporary seating in mind which will definitely work for the first season, but I'd like to get something done that is more professional. I don't want to permanently mount something that isn't going to be the final solution.

The live well is removable but I will hold off until we have the seating figured out. It does have mounting points screwed into the vertical structure behind it and the hull floor. Would be nice to get a custom bench seat that would use these same holes for it's install instead of creating new. Am getting pricing on a custom unit just for consideration.

Without the live well -

Aft seating that BW offers with the live well but they're about $1,800!! Not able to locate an aftermarket that looks or mounts like it.

Can get aft step cushions and use a backrest from an Outrage 17 but not sure how much back support it provides. Not sure it'd be comfortable but nice temporary seating.

The swim platform is on the port side so was thinking of adding a bench that only extended about 2/3 the way across to allow access. Found some of these to fold down or up to allow additional deck space when needed.

Lots of options but first I need to figure out the bow rail and get it installed. First winter season project along with standard winterization and maintenance on the engine.

Hope to get it waxed soon as well.

perhaps these would work for your aft seat either side of the engine well? you could get proper backed seats that give the right support.

Thanks, yes I've seen something similar and have thought about it. I would prefer a bench if possible. There's even a bench seat option for the later 170 models that folds down into a sundeck but haven't tracked down in it's integrated into the hull or mounted separately. Information about it has been slim. I just need to follow my wife's advice and slow down for a bit. Before considering anything, I need to take some accurate measurements.

Got pricing back on the split rail and was shocked that the price from Whaler was the best.

From the dealer - $926
Local custom 01, stainless steel: - $950
Local custom 02, aluminum: - $1,800
Local custom 02, stainless steel: - $2,800

Nice knowing that the dealer is the cheapest since it will guarantee it matches the profile and fit as expected and don't have to worry about the local custom shops and what their 'interpretation' of it should be.

Only issue is that the closest dealer is an 8 - 9 hour round trip. They can ship straight to me from Whaler but it has to be to a business with semi-truck access, which may be a problem. I'll have to check and see what my options are.
