Hammar fire on hydrostatic pressure, about 10 cm of water depth will cause a big enough pressure to trigger them, normal autos fire when the salt / paper pellet dissolves on immersion in water.
Normal autos are easy to self service at home, I believe Hammar are not easy to service yourself (never had one).

Ah, so the Hammar won’t go off if you get drenched by a wave because it requires pressure.
Thanks for that!

Not a complete idiot - some parts are missing.

Taffythesailor
I'd imagine it'd suit your needs best being afloat alone on a sailboat and one with crutch straps
You can purchase a service kit (the LJ's Hammar mechanism have a lifespan of 5 years) so check the dates at point of purchase
If the date's running out get a discount

Re: Pool harbour 27th
The standard autos will not go off if you are drenched by a wave, as water being thrown at you just hits the lifejacket and runs off. The auto mechanism is very well protected from water being thrown at the outside of a lifejacket. However if a standard auto is put away in a locker without drying it out after a good drenching it can then self inflate a few days later as the dampness seeps through to the inside of the lifejacket. I have had that happen 3 times (so now after a drenching I open up the jacket and let it dry out overnight).
I always buy standard auto jackets but that's just my personal preference.

The manuals are manual pull only,ChrisParish wrote: ↑23 Jun 2018, 21:24What’s the difference between the standard Auto and the Hammar?
The autos are manual pull with an auto fire (paper activation- i think) when wet,
The hammar are pressure activation, alledgedly only going off when the life jacket is subject to water pressure (10cm pressure difference) - hopefully avoiding splash activation.
Also manual activation as normal.

Re: Pool harbour 27th
I called into force4 chandlery in Cardiff yesterday, I tried on a few but found the Crewsaver 180 Pro Auto/Harness to be a comfy fit. They had the no harness ones in stock but I need to be tethered when going on deck on my own. I can't see my dog turning the boat around if I took a spill !
So I've got the F-rib and the life jacket, I just need my outboard to turn up an im ready for the 27th !!!!!

Re: Pool harbour 27th
Where and what time will you be launching? And are you only going out on the 27th?
