Heavy outboard difficult to tilt.

Just an aside to prove I’m not going mad, here is the video I found of my outboard (albeit the mercury version) which details tilting via the tiller.
Shame more outboards don’t support this as it makes it really easy to do. However, as has been emphasised, do not do this if your outboard isn’t designed for it!

I've never seen that tilt using the tiller handle before. I suspect that's a feature unique to that particular range of Mercury / Mariner outboards. I don't think most tiller handles are designed to take those sorts of stresses and strains. I've always grabbed the air intake and pulled from there on any small manual tilt outboard.

Yes thanks I did try it but the cover came off lol maybe the clip wasn't positioned correctly - will give it a go. Thanks.

Don’t think it’s meant to be used as Martin has showed on his pic, you should be tilting it via the hand hole I’ve arrowed, like you have said the cover will easily pull of as it’s only held by the clip at the back, it’s not designed for that purpose, more for styling

This is getting confusing.
It would be virtually impossible to tilt any current 15/20 four stroke without using top handhold. The hood catch should easily cope with these forces if correctly engaged.
Couple of pics from a BF20 manual shows Honda agree.

I stand corrected then Harrison, but if I try that with my Suzuki it pulls the cover off,

It’s not for styling lol, it’s the air intake. Everyone I’ve ever seen tilt an outboard manually has used that air intake scoop to tilt.. thankfully my hood catch has never had an issue as yet.

Like I said Martin I stand corrected. Unlike some I’m not afraid to admit if I get something wrong but if I try to lift my engine using the cover it pulls it off, hence I use the lower grab point on my engine, and maybe as your engine sees very little use the clamp still fits very tight unlike mine which sees the water on a regular basis

Yes, unfortunately Paul - I’m landlocked down here in Huddersfield. Hence when I do get my boat out I like to maximise its use and cover some miles.
You’ll be surprised just how many hours I covered in the week I was up north during the wwa.
But now as I’m back at home, kids wanting this, work wanting that and a forum to run.. it all takes my boating leisure time away.. but hey, it’s worth it.
One day when I’m old, I’ll retire off to the sea side and enjoy it then.
Family is more important right now.
