Scanners

Post by DaveRolph » 07 Jun 2023, 13:43

I have my Hand held VHS and License, I carry it for safety and hope I never have to use it.

One thing I realised this year is that you should not use it ashore (not even to listen in), I am nosey and like to listen in, I know some won't agree with that but this year in Scotland when I got back from fishing, I really enjoyed watching various vessels go by and using Marine Traffic App and spotting scope.

I am going to Cornwall later in the year (without the boat but with the scope and app.)

I am staying overlooking Morgan Porth so what I want to know is if anyone has any thoughts on using a scanner (receiving only) and if so if anyone has any experience / links for something portable but decent.

Thanks in advance.

P.S The Frib 360 was great fun again this year, plenty of footage taken so will post later in the year when not so busy

Personally . I'd say go for it ...

If I recall my various radio telephony exams ( marine & aviation) - anyone can listen at any point ashore or afloat - its the transmitting or recording that can land you in trouble - at least in theory anyway .

I regularly listen to marine VHF if I'm in the shed or Air traffic for Bournemouth airshow for example .
