I've got one of the Amazon ones the same as Steve's picture. It hasn't died yet despite getting fairly splashed, but did eat through one battery which was easy to replace. The RPM display on mine seems fairly accurate and matches what I'd expect from the engine. However the let down for me is the hour meter. Which makes no sense. If the engine is running at any RPM the minutes should be counting, right? Well, no. It's massively off. Seems to record about half the hours. And that was the main reason I wanted one.

So I bought a new one. I haven't got around to fitting it yet. It's physically tiny compared to the Amazon/Chinese one... ...but a bit pricey :(

A bit hard to find in the UK, but I think I got it from here: https://www.trailtechproducts.co.uk/aca ... _Hour.html

If you can stomach the cost, they do get good write-ups. I'll report back if I ever get around to swapping them over.

It could be worse, if you bought the TTO from Amazon Germany or Italy it would be 74 Euro's !!

Thanks, I will give one of these a go, relatively cheap given the price of other items :)

We also use the Trail Tech TTO ones, small in size with a sharp display. Agree not cheap but fitted to all our outboards and not had one fail yet. Non replaceable batteries with minimum 5 year life.

@Froglet hour log seems spot on. Only a few mins difference between engine data print out (at service) in 200+ hours on our 60.

I had a few days off so I unwrapped the outboard from hibernation and shooed away all the spiders. The battery had died again in my old inaccurate tach, but it's heading into retirement after an entirely underwhelming career, so no loss. Removed it from the engine so you could see the respective sizes.

The fitting was the same procedure as most of these devices. Cut wire to desired length, strip outer sheath, coil wire around HT lead, zip tie or tape securely then set the pulse per revolution appropriate for your motor. In my case, for a twin cylinder 2 stroke, that was 2ppr to get the revs to show the correct value.

I mounted the tach on the hinge of the tiller which makes it a really nice angle to see while under way. The previous tach was too large to mount in that position because it fouled the casing when folding the tiller, but the tiny TTO is perfect.

Then I went for a slow jaunt down the Thames to dust everything off. Three hours and a couple of locks showed that the hour meter was spot on, but sticking carefully to the speed limit of 5mph meant never getting much over 2000rpm so full testing of the tach will have to wait for my next visit to the sea.
