T38 Transom Wheels

Post by harrison » 07 Apr 2020, 21:39

As not a big fan of the flimsy Honwave cantilever style transom wheels, am always on the lookout for an alternative solution.

Spotted these on the same Russian eBay shop @Gray got those mega alumin transom wheels for his Elling. :thumbsup

Thought they looked robust and would hopefully clear the trim tabs, with the help of some packing under the brackets, so took a bit of a punt and ordered a set a while back.

They arrived today, delivery being somewhat delayed by the current situation, and first impressions are pretty good.

Look very robust with decent finish 32mm dia. tubing and 3mm thick brackets all in 316 stainless steel throughout.

So, need to get boat inflated and see if they’re actually going to fit. :whistle

Looks interesting. My trim tabs extend just a smidge over 10 inches so, like you say, some sort of riser will probably be needed, but otherwise that looks like a promising product.

I look forward to the fitting report.

:thumbsup

the 32 was millimetres not centimetres ,and it refered to diameter of the tube which it was made from @MadnessOfTheSeas

They look good. They have taken a while to come, haven't they! I have an outboard trolley stuck in customs somewhere between Russia and here.

Soo...preliminary ‘no holes’ dry fit carried out today with battens and G-clamps, just to see what’s what.

Good news is they will fit over the stupid trim tabs, albeit with the addition of a hefty spacer of around 55mm total offset.....larger than envisaged.

Dry fit - raised

Brackets seem robust enough, very quick and easy to engage/disengage.

Large strong brackets

Just clears motor on full lock...and can also move out a further 15mm if desired.

Decent ground clearance even with the small 260mm dia wheels supplied.

Plenty of clearance - motor lowered

Have the option to fit some larger wheels for uneven terrain/sand.

Takes bigger wheels ok

I think they will be plenty robust enough to support boat and 20hp motor. If you can cope with the not insubstantial brackets spaced 50 odd mil off the transom then should prove a more robust alternative to the Honwave type.

I’ll not be drilling and fitting these until my boat has been tested in the water. Fingers crossed, but this is my third warranty replacement T38, so not holding my breath just yet.

Nice. I like the look of those.

How strong is the spring loaded bit? What's the chances of a leg bouncing out when raised and you're "making progress" in less than flat conditions?

Agree @Froglet also a concern.

Whilst spring feels strong they are delightfully easy to clip in/out. They will also, I fear, rattle in use so a simple bungee cord should address both issues.
