Anywere to sail local to Derbyshire?

Post by Ronky001 » 14 Jan 2020, 18:36

Good evening group, as some maybe aware I don't own a boat yet but hoping to purchase a SIB of some description in the next month or so. My question to the group is; I live near Chesterfield in Derbyshire, are there any locations in that vicinity where I could take the SIB and have a potter around to get the most fun possible from owning it? Rother valley Country park for example.
Many thanks.

@harrison lives around there (well, Derby) so maybe he can help.
Not a complete idiot - some parts are missing.

Unfortunately not, well not around us.

Loads of lakes and reservoirs to sail but not if motorised.

As far as I know Rother Valley only allow powered craft in the mornings for one hour between 9.00-10.00am. They refer to it as an engine testing session.

In season we boat on the north east coast. Over winter just a few day trips, usually on the south coast.

Locally there’s always the rivers. We’ve been on the Trent a few times and can be a good day out.

Thank you Harrison. Looks like it will be same for me; possibly Whitby if permitted and Devon/ Cornwall. Have you sailed off Wales coast at all?

Only once many years ago I’m afraid. Launched from Sunnysands Caravan Park a few miles north of Barmouth.
Based in Northumberland over the summer so most of our boating is up there.

I live in chesterfield and have considered the canal just need insurance and it’s not that expensive I know is not very long but it’s on the water. I think you can hire a windless so you can use the locks it’s all a bit of fun

Thank you Benno. I have just been looking at the chesterfield canal as a starting point. Tapton lock or Staveley basin. Like you said it not very far but would be a starting point..

I know a lot of work has been done on the canal by volunteers but could debris be a problem. I haven't even walked along it and live 10 mins away.

We could do with a meet up north at some time, whether a visit to the lakes or out of North Wales somewhere.

Martin :cheers

Good thinking Batman. :thumbsup

I’d be up for a day trip to the lakes with the sib. Would Ullswater be any good? Can ya have a cheeky zoom around a bit when it’s quiet?

Not been before but seem to recall folks recommending Park Foot for launching. Any ideas.
