Hi from a Derbyshire SIB Newbie

Post by T4Chris » 01 Sep 2019, 10:33

Hi all, I’m new to powered boating in general, been doing lots of research l. Currently have an Ocean kayak that I love getting out on with the kids. I’m looking to get a SIB, like the previous new member post I had shortlisted a Honwave T38 but am also now a little spooked regarding quality control. I have only read such concerns on here and elsewhere only good things so I’m hoping this isn’t too widespread. I’m also going to be purchasing a light ( as possible ) 20hp+ outboard ( ideally 25 ). My intention is to explore the coasts and have a little fun dragging inflatables. Really pleased to have found this forum!! :thumbsup

Hi Chris, :welcome
Thankyou for the kind words regarding our superb community.... :clappy

The T38ie is a bloody marvelous ....Sorry, Was a remarkable sib.. Superb quality, excellent handling, a dream to buy and use.
The recent floor issues have left us somewhat :thud and not in the right frame of mind to push it as a quality boat anymore. Having said that, If you can find a one with a quality built floor, ignore all the bad press it's gained.

The new Yamaha 25hp is about as light as you'll get in a 25hp motor..
Below that it has to be the Suzuki DF20efi or the Tohatsu 20efi for maximumm power/minimum weight offering.

Enjoy the forum..

Martin :cheers

Thanks Martin. Was just researching the weight thing and I agree the lovely Yam F25 seems to me the one to get since it’s the lightest of any 2 or 4 stroke 25hp ( so Yamaha claim in their marketing anyway ). Problem is it’s weighs 57kg even with just pull start and tiller yet the T38 maximum engine/transom weight is just 55kg. So seemingly ( from my research at least ) whilst the maximum power a T38 can handle is 25hp there’s no engine that will give that power to weight ratio. This may well explain the package deals seem to stop at 20hp offerings!? Am I missing something or is the T38 NOT actually suitable or any 25hp motor currently available???

Hi Chris,

Welcome to the madhouse, you may even get some good advice here, at least on a good day.

We’re based in Derby and have a new wonky floor edition T38 and Mariner 20. Welcome to pop round and take a butchers if of any help.

Re motors, the transom is rated to 25hp/83kg so any of the latest 25’s will fit....good luck lifting them though.

So given there are known QC issues with Honwave now, how do I procure a MWH model ( not wonky hull ). I read that dealer won’t unbox so is it best to insist on buying a showroom/already inflated model? Worth buying a show model at the boat show perhaps??

This was where I quoted the transom weight from but I’m glad it’s apparently misquoted

It looks like Honda Marine have increased the transom max weight specs since early version IE2's .. I've not seen that anywhere Harrison but guess you'll know as you have the T38ie2 :thumbsup
I have a T38ie2 manual and it's not rated to that... :thud

But Chris... Those 40kg plus motors get heavy very quickly... you'll be suprised how much difference a few kg's makes.

Many of us have complained and moaned at Honda Marine Uk...
Highly unlikely, But perhaps they've fed the info back to China, Who knows... But i think the last few boats we've seen on here have been better... Maybe they were new stock, maybe they were very old stock.. only time will tell.
I'd be very tempted to buy from any dealer who is happy to open the boat up, inflate and re-pack whilst you're there...

If you can find a good one, it's still a bloody good boat. :thumbsup

Martin :cheers
