Fishing "Billy Buoy" off Shoreham harbour in the Grey Goose.
Fishing "Billy Buoy" off Shoreham harbour in the Grey Goose today.
Finally a proper day out in the "Grey Goose" 165 Warrior with Matt and one of his friends.
A lot going on at home and family so a well earned break.
We had Bass (Catch and Release), Bream, Mackerel, Horse Mackerel, Gurnard, Strap Conger, Smooth Hound, Dogfish and of course this fantastic Thornback Ray.
Grey Goose's engine is now run in and she is now topping 34 mph.

Sounds a cracking session you had, and well done on the Thornie. Cracking fish. Hoping to get out tomorrow myself if the mist lifts.

How are you finding the Warrior 165?

Chris, Great...loved the Honwave but the Warrior is a different class
Obviously a lot more expensive to buy and run than the Honda T38 but...
Annual mooring fee is £1,900.00, plus boat and trailer was £21,000.00
Easy access via Brighton Marina, I can go out at any tide or time, some weekends the tide wasnt right for launching the Honwave
Had a floating Tetradoack dock installed so I dont need antifouling (some pictures added)
Launching problems are gone, easy to drive on and off.
Grey Goose (Warrior 165) is fine in sea conditions I wouldn't like in the Honwave
Boat fishes well with 3 fishing in the boat. Plenty of room to move around, comfy seat, no bum and leg cramps.
Room to handle larger fish, we had a lot of small conger (5) off Kingsmere Reef yesterday, most around 3 ft with teeth.
Being able to walk around and stand up and pave plenty of storage is lovely.
Now the 70hp Honda engine is in second stage run in I can go to full power for five mins at a time.
Full power 5,500 revs she does 34 mph, but at 4,500 she is at 25 mph and on the plane, so 3/4 hour to get out to Littlehampton from Brighton (15 miles).
Yesterday we fished 3 locations: SS Penryth, Kingsmere Reef and Billy Boy all on one tank of fuel so not too expensive.
So a lot of money but I dont regret spending it, I,m in my 60s and beach launching was very hard.
Looking forward to targeting larger fish now we have capability of getting out to some wrecks of Brighton.
Phil

Thanks for the mini review. My Honda BF50 is incredibly frugal on fuel if I keep it below 4000 RPM. It would be interesting to see fuel usage figures for the 75 (I'm guessing it's a 75 and not a 70) at under 4000 rpm

We did just over 30 miles at average 4,500 revs Honda 70 hp outboard on one tank 25 litres which I calc is 5.5 UK Gallons, so I guess about 5.5 miles to gallon not a lot compared to my 3.2 litre car.

Re: Fishing "Billy Buoy" off Shoreham harbour in the Grey Goose.
On my Honda 50 I generally average around 0.6 litres per nautical mile (nm). On a Yamaha 130 I'm achieving around 1 litre per nautical mile. On a Yamaha 250 & Yamaha 300 I'm using about 1.2 litres per nm as long as I keep the speed under 35 kts (above 45 kts the same Yamaha is gobbling around 2.5 litres per nm). So your fuel consumption sounds about right.
I suspect if you cruise at under 4000 rpm you will see noticeably better fuel economy than at 4500 rpm. That seems to be my findings so far with 4 strokes.

Re: Fishing "Billy Buoy" off Shoreham harbour in the Grey Goose.
New boat and Tetradock looks great -envious of your easy launch set up, very cool.
Performance seems similar to our Mariner 60 with an easy 25mph cruise at 4500rpm. Full chat at 6000rpm gives us 36-38mph one up on a good day, but would imagine our rig is somewhat lighter. Fuel wise around 0.5 to 0.6 litres/mile I think.
Don’t know why, but I thought you had a Suzuki 70 on the Warrior. In fact didn’t even know Honda had a 70 in their line up.
Enjoy your new boat, it looks great.

I also though Honda didn't make a 70, I thought the Honda model was a 75.
