Johnson 15 oil leak?
Evening
Just discovered a thick black sticky oil has run out of the water outlet hole at the bottom of the leg on my 2005 Johnson overnight.
Doesn't look like gearbox oil and has as slight smell of petrol to it.
Any ideas?

Re: Johnson 15 oil leak?
Is it a 2 stroke or a 4 stroke? Has it been stored upright or on it's side?

2 stroke. Transported as normal then stored upright as it always is and never seen this before.

Re: Johnson 15 oil leak?
I'd check your gearbox oil level just to be sure, and if that's ok, as Andy says, it can only be one thing unburnt 2 stroke oil. As it smells of petrol that's another pointer to it being 2 stroke oil.
What ratio of 2 stroke oil / fuel are you using?

Re: Johnson 15 oil leak?
Only really spent time on tick over while flushing. I'll check the gearbox oil.
I run it on a 50 to 1 mix.
Thanks

Re: Johnson 15 oil leak?
As long as the gearbox only takes a small amount of oil in the bottom hole, before it flows out the top hole, and the gearbox oil isn’t milky, everything is good.
50:1 is fine.

Re: Johnson 15 oil leak?
I’d be very surprised if it is gearbox oil, but better safe than sorry for the sake of half an hour and a bottle of gearbox oil. That reminds me, my Tohatsu is due a gearbox oil change as its now done 20 hours.

Re: Johnson 15 oil leak?
Update....gearbox oil okay and no sign of anything after running again so suspecting it was unburnt oil and wondering if I did something daft and put too much oil in the mix. Any way all is good.
