Halmatic DS110 "Desperate" MK2

Post by Si Crowe » 03 Oct 2017, 10:27

following a request from martin to re upload some pics due to photo bucket being greedy shites I figured I'd just start a new thread...so...

As some of you will know last year I took on a 46 year old boat that's been in my family for a long time. I fact I grew up on it from a very early age.
She's an unusual vessel. the hull was penned in 1968 by Don Shead (he also designed many great race boats of that era like the "Cinzano" race boat and all the performance Sunseeker's from the Offshore 31 to the predator 108 plus many more) for class 2 offshore racing, Halmatic then bought the hull and commissioned Don Shead to style a superstructure.

they made 28 cruisers between 1969 and 72 to fund the ultimate goal of making fast gun boats.

So, anyway here she is from her long drive up to me in Yorkshire after being driven up from Southampton...

Below, the moment she left the trailer was a heart in mouth moment that's for sure

so on to the next phase, getting the safety certificate as being on the south coast, she's never needed one...

she needed all the old diesel draining (500L), clean the tanks (all 3), replace all the fuel lines, fuel separators, fuel taps and cut offs, install a new fuel filler on the port saddle tank, renew the gas cylinder locker, gas regulator plus loads more.....

Well, Since the last post I've secured a permanent berth up on the Ouse in Acaster Malbis so at least i can use her without pissing about with locks all the time. Ok, it's not the Solent but i have a little more freedom now. The berth has fresh water and electric and is private. big enough to put a rattan table and chairs on, patio heater and so on. bit of a slice of nice!!! :thumbsup :thumbsup I've got some solar lights around the rails to give a little light in the night, make it a bit more sociable in the summer....Plus...it's way nicer than the damn canal!!!

Wow, what an incredible boat, thanks for sharing and congratulations on the new berth!
The machine gun option looks as if it could be very handy when they're dinghy racing on the Medway

Yeah. i did wonder about fitting one!!! A few people comment on the hull shape being quite "military" in stance like an old MTB or patrol boat...

she's got a very deep V hull with a constant deadrise so cuts through the chop well...

While i'm on a roll here are a few more pics.

these are some of Halmatics and Don Shead's original drawings, schematics and brochure pictures.

The 2 Perkins Sabres M225ti engines on Borg Warner direct drive gear boxes look snug in there but there is full access 100% around them plus the whole cockpit sole lifts in 5 mins and can get both engines out in under 2hrs (not that you'd want to)

Plus the groove they make @ 25kts cruising speed.
wake.jpg
Here are a few cockpit and helm pics. the cockpit is sparse but there are infill cushions that go across the aft cabin doors to create a full width bench seat with a cockpit table mount on the floor for alfresco munchies.

The Helm seats, again are unusual, they are vintage offshore racing seats. they have an upright or reclined position so in rough sea you stand up and lean back or when calmer, recline and sit in (they look like racks but are amazingly comfy). the actual pedestals go through the cockpit sole and down 2ft on the bearer in front of the engines... very solid!! i'm hoping to remove them this winter to get them blasted and powder coated. tidy them up.
