Ach thats an easy one to answer Martin..in fact..because it was so wet today.. I spent the day making my solution..it cost me a total of £25 ..and is far more robust than transom wheels.. and like all things..has multi uses. Its getting painted Guppy Grey at the mo..so it should appear here sometime tomorrow. Im sure you will like it..sometimes the simple things are best..and its the way small boats were launched ...long before transom wheels ...oh..and its not inflatable either..in case you wondered.

But like all good Gurnard posts..you will have to wait util tomorrow ...to be continued ... :rofl

Gurnard I'm intrigued to see your solution to shifting your Sib around without wheels.
I'm guessing you've found yourself a wummin to take along on your adventures - took her for a 25 quid pub lunch?
Im thinking youve charmed a good strong wummin to carry your Sib around for you and attend your every need.

Delighted to see you have joined the Frib club Donny. I know you were interested in them when I did the 'First Impressions' post on another forum when the boat was just launched.
I have had a very busy year in 2015 and ashamed to say it was a year of no boating for me BUT this is another year and looking forward to getting my Frib wet again. I really look forward to what you will do with this little gem and confess that I have no shame whatsoever so may very well copy some of your ideas although having the Frib spray deck, I won't need to copy that but by the same token I must say that had I not gone that route.......I would make my own.

Good boating and tight lines

Phil

Wow Kaman .. are you sure thats a wummin ?

Im thinking even the tide wouldn't take her out ..but I guess Im one to talk :o

Nice to see you around Philpot..and yup..I remember your post well. It created a lot of interest..and I was interested back then..but waited until I hear how the folding mechanism was standing up to use.

You are not stealing my ideas ..any more than Im stealing others..although some seem to be long forgotten..like the inflatable rollers I use to launch the Quicksilver at difficult locations.. and also the part Im working on to assist launch the F-Rib. Im happy to post the things I have learned to others. Some may find then useful..some wont.. but its all about sharing experiences and info

Hope you get the boat back on the water and get some serious fishing done too :cheers

I remember the rollers! I'm now wondering whether they'd work with the rib!

Hi Bluetac..depends on its weight.the rollers come in different strengths for heavier weights.

As soon as I lifted the F-Rib.. I realised I had been a bit over enthusiastic thinking I could carry the 36kg of weight over 100 yards or so of rocky shore.

I have an allergy to SIB transom wheels because ..they are very expensive and some cheaper ones break easy .. they involve drilling the transom. Last but not least .. they clutter up the back of the boat ..making it very difficult to fit an Auxiliary outboard.

Therefore..for me ..the F-Rib brand wheels ..or any other make ..of transom wheels were not for me.

But that is because I know there is as many ways to launch a boat..as there is to skin a cat. :D

I knew I needed wheels.. I knew I wanted them portable and take up little space ..I knew I wanted them to be very cheap.

That ruled out a traditional launching trolley..too bulky.. and still too expensive. I could use my inflatable roller boats..but decided the best thing was the way folk used to launch rowing boats etc before the SIB came along.

I chose to make a transom dolly .. it cost me £30 to make ..has 18” pneumatic tyres so can handle any shore I choose ..and last but not least ..its Clyde built and designed .. in other words..very robust. Ideal for my use..a bit more difficult with a very heavy outboard though..as you don't attach the outboard until you are in the water.

Never heard of a transom Dolly ? I guess you are not as old as me then. So here is the one I made for the F-Rib

This photo shows it stored under the seat and in the empty space behind me. I can stand on it as a duck board...its unbreakable
01349BB1-F4F5-4CF7-8BE5-54117E926311.jpeg
A front view of it stowed under my seat. I will get a couple of plastic end caps so the axle wont damage the tubes if is bounces around in a chop
B60F0A06-F01D-4079-9BCE-081B0C728DB9.jpeg
It can still be stowed fully assembled ..if I want to use it again shortly. It is only finger tight 12m nuts that hold the wheels on the axle.

It is very simple to use in practice. It is basically a board with an axle and wheels mounted to the bottom. It has a shelf above the wheels that the rear of the boat sits on ..and at the top..it has a couple of angle brackets that fit over the transom. These hold it in place as you move the boat...it can be pushed forwards..or backwards.. because of the two ropes that are attached to the shelf that the boat is sat on..also helps hold the dolly in place.

The rope is fed under the boat and turned round the front handle. I lift and pull the rope and the boat moves no problem. The ropes acts like the front spar of a traditional launch trolley

This photo shows the angle brackets on the transom..which prevent the rope pulling the dolly under the boat.

To install the Dolly.. lift the transom.. put the hooks over the transom.. push the shelf under the boat..let the boat sit on the shelf. Feed the ropes up under the boat..round the handle ..and off you go.

Some of the old timers I knew..use to use their outboard instead of angle brackets..in other words ..the board was cut flush with the transom height..they then put their outboard on the transom ..including the board.. and tighten the outboard mounts.

I didn’t do it this way as it was slightly more difficult to do single handed. However I have been know to use a G clamp to firmly hold the board to the transom bracket on really rough ground.

Here is a photo of the boat sitting on the shelf. Just look at that.. no holes in the transom at all. Its sitting on wood..so wont damage the hull. I may or may not pad it a little once it is painted Guppy Grey

8E28FDEC-1DBE-4A8E-8CA3-7E70E57C2AD5.jpeg
The 18” wheels are Screw Fix ones. The cost £15 each..but I have bought a few and know that in their January sales ..they always offer two for the price of one..so both wheels cost me £15 total.

I got the threaded rod for the axle..and the heavy duty metal angle brackets for shelf and transom brackets from the local DIY store ..another £15. The wood is recycled from my seago store and also the wooden pallet the boat arrived on..so no cost.

I will paint it guppy grey to match the boat..at present the undercoat is still soft. I had the paint from other jobs..so again no cost

Sometimes the old ways are still the best..at least for me..but then..Im an old codger like the guys that launched their wooden tenders this way .... many years go.

Nice one Gurnard.
Practical and cheap solution to getting your Guppy afloat.
Never seen one being used but saw a few homemade dollys lying around Isle Of Whithorn Harbour a few years ago for launching small wooden fishing boats.
Do you think that you will be taking the dolly out in the Frib most times when you are out exploring, or will you be more inclined to anchor it up and use your waders to come ashore.
I was nearly right with my earlier guess of a 'wummin' = dolly (bird) :cheers

I had something very similar strapped to my canoe when I was a kid.
A pair of pram wheels fixed to a wooden axle and a leather belt around the canoe.
Then the front of the canoe tied to the back of my pushbike :D

Simpler days.....

As they say, sometimes the simple answer is the best solution.

Looking at your transom flange Donny, did you cut out the fibre glass to offer a better fit for the engine or did yours come to you as that. I made spacer splates to allow for a much better grip than was possible with the transom flange to the full width as I didn't want to cut a recess but now I mat decide to cut it back and remove the spacer plates. I should say there is a recessed area but not really cut back enough for a safe a good grip on the engine.

The issue I had is shown in this next photo, the engine is not flat against the transom plate because the engine is catching the transom flange. No longer an issue however.

Hope that makes sense.

Hi Kaman.. I will probably use the dolly same as a trailer..once launched..shove it in the car. Im very used to stopping with heavy boats on beaches..so that is not an issue. So saying..I have the option to take it with me if I intend staying a good while..far from the original launch point. As I will initially use the 3.3hp OB..I will want to be as light as poss. I might even go on a gravy diet..if I thought I could plane with that OB.

Hi Andy..my mates with kayaks left me standing last week. Low tide and a portage of almost ¼ mile. They used kayak trolleys to move their stuff.. and easily did the journey in one go. I huffed and puffed carrying the Seago on my back..and also made three journeys for outboard and gear. That wont happen again with this setup

Hi Philpot ..thanks for the heads up. I have been that busy with mods..I had not even though of attaching the outboard.

I just tried it..and like yours.. the GRP sits proud of the mount about 2mm. The gaskets you made are a good idea too.

I am very happy with the boat.. no quality issues..not a leak or loss of air anywhere .. so wont be sending it back.. Its also built like a tank..a very good and solid hull.

After I try it on the water ..I will probably just trim the GRP. I have a fast diamond cutting wheel that will do the job in seconds..and give a good cut. I will probably start doing other hull mods soon too...nothing drastic..but I probably fibre glass some fixing eyelet at strategic internal points ..so I can tie things down.

I still have an accessory I want to make..that will make life easier too..and it will need fixing down. Good news is the F Rib dodger and transom wheels cost around £350 ..and mine cost me less than £50. ...hmmm..wonder if I could make a F-Rib and save that much again :D

Weather here is terrible so no hurry to get it wet ..yet ..but I will suddenly take a notion.. :drive
