Hi Mark

The new smaller pitch, but cupped to bring the pitch back up, propeller has cured the ventilation.

I didn’t want to go down the route of hydrofoils, so no permatrim fitted.

Do you have a Takacat @Knox ? If so which model of Takacat, and which outboard?

Hi Chris,

have you been out with the new prop? How does it work?
Do you have Permatrim Hydrofoils on your engine?

Mark

Not yet. But I´m planning to get one. The same model as yours, a 340 LX.

I´m not sure about the Outboard. I´m living next to the Lake Constance, where only 4-strokes are allowed. Until now I don´t have a license for the Lake, so I´m restricted to 6 hp.

Probably I will buy a Tohatsu MFS 6 4s. It may be too weak for us (4-head-family, about 190 kg/ 420 lbs and gaining...). But I don´t want a much heavier outboard.

The boat and the outboard should be transported in two boxes (one on a towbar bike rack, one on a tailgate bike rack of our camper van):

The german Takacat dealer, Friedel Hacker, recommends a Tohatsu or Mercury outboard (due to the shape of the standart prop, which minimizes the ventilation problems) and Permatrim Hydrofoils. Do you see any disadvantages with the Hydrofoils?

@Knox when I did my online research it seemed that cupping the prop had a better chance of success than adding a permatrim. And the cupping in my case worked perfectly. I also don’t like the extra drag from a hydrofoil (with 6hp you are going to need all 6hp and minimum drag). But if the permatrim is a proven fix with the Tohatsu 6hp go for it. Personally I’d want evidence from the dealer that the particular engine and permatrim is going to work on the Takacat with no ventilation. The Takacats seem exceptionally fussy over the shape and size of propeller.

Thank you for your advice. I hope I will meet the dealer at the interboot exhibition in september.

Where did you order your cupped prop?

I found that our 20hp Tohatsu and Merc engine had a longer shaft than advertised. It was labeled as 15 inch but actually measured at around 17 inches. This may improve or hinder your performance. It hurt us and I had to raise it substantially on the transom to get the best performance.
Wrote a note said, 'back in a minute'. Bought a boat and I sailed off in it.

Hey @chris moody

I'm considering buying a Takacat and running it wit a Tohatsu 9.8 2s

Having read this thread I realise I'll also need a cupped prop - can I ask what you ordered and from where?

This will be my first boat so need all the help I can get!

cheers!

@Robin Grant I don't think Chris Moody is still using this forum. You may have some luck contacting him on Rhibs. Hope you find him, he's a very helpful guy.
