Humber 4 meter Rib

Here you can document your Outboards, SIB's and RIB's re-building challenge.
Restoration is satisfying, a great way to learn, and usually a way of getting something special whilst saving money..

Humber 4 meter Rib

Post by Andy B » 10 Jan 2019, 22:38

Not sure if this goes here or in the Rib section, but as this is likely to turn into a build thread i'd thought i'd drop it here?

So.......
The story starts back at the end of 2016, I came into possession of a 30hp Tohatsu/Mariner.
The engine was part of a rib purchase i made and was totally unsuitable for the 3.1m Avon it was bolted too at the time :o

I did toy with the idea of using it on the Zodiac 380, but decided it was to heavy to lug around which kind'a defeats the ethos of SIB ownership???

Took the decisions that i wasn't going to use it and decided to sell it on.
Now normally i don't have any problems selling engines, in fact i'd go as far as saying i was quite good at it
But this engine seemed to be the exception???
Many times i had buyers interested and every time they turned out to just be time wasters!!!

The engine went to the back of the workshop and started to get buried......never a good sign :no

Moving forward to the end of 2018 and it's time for one of those big cleans in the man cave.
And what pops up, yep the Mariner. something had to be done about this and i was in no state of mind to deal with any more time wasters.
It's short shaft so options are limited, but i decided to find a 4m RIB that took a short shaft and build something ;-)

I put the word out that i was on the lookout for a project. Hopefully a bare boat that i can rig myself.
After trawling through the internet and going through my black book a received a message about a 4m Humber that was exactly the sort of thing i was looking for.

So this is where i am, If there's any interest i will post my progress with this project, but in the meantime i'l wish you all a Happy New Year. :D

So a bit of background to the boat, turns out it's had an interesting past.
The name on it is Mayan Queen IV.
A quick Google will give you some insight into the name, but i will give you a heads up...

The story is that it was a crew boat, (certainly not the tender.)
It was replaced during a refit while the yacht was in plymouth. This of course is hearsay, the boat came with no documentation...
Since then it has been owned by a guy who used it for spear fishing.
This is when the bow dodger was cut out and the seats removed...
Although it is now in a bit of a state it appears that it will clean up nicely and the tubes hold air. (always a bonus! )

Love it! I had a 3.5m humber.. orange so orange. Huge flat hull and deck. But hang on.. your doing up boats and my garage has several engines in it! What's going on in 2019.?

Great when you see how well things can come up with a clean.
