F-RIB 360 & 9.9 Mercury

Folding Ribs or F-Ribs are a great way of obtaining a hard hull boat but having the flexibility of a sib.
F-Ribs have the 3 or 4 section articulating hinge joint that allow the boat to fold up for ease of storage & transportation. A great idea opening up a whole new world of opportunity.

F-RIB 360 & 9.9 Mercury

Post by Vladster » 22 Nov 2018, 22:30

Hi all,

I’m doing a bit of research for a small familly boat to use it in the Adriatic sea to get us away from the crowded beaches and for the size a F-RIB 360 looks promising. I have an older mercury 9.9 lightning lying around and wanted to ask if this motor would be able to get me my wife and two daughters (9&7yo) planing ?

Hi Vladster, :welcome to F-Ribs & Sibs.
With you thinking of the hard hull f-rib, I would think your 9.9hp May be capable, but depending on weight - It could be borderline.
Could you possibly give us any idea of the weight we are talking about as a family ?
Obviously if you were to start adding extra fuel, picnic stuff, camping gear it will affect it dramatically.

Whilst you’re awaiting others to reply, it would be appreciated if you could post a little “Hello” on our “introduce yourself” page, that way more of the members get to see you have joined..

I think whole family with gear should be around 240 - 260 kg .

Thanks for the input. 😃

Hi Vladster, if the engine is 2 stroke then I believe it will plane.
The prop is the next issue so that you get the max rpm at wide open throttle (wot).
You'll need a rev counter , this is the inductance rpm meter you can buy for £15 or there abouts.
It's internal battery I'm told lasts about 3yrs......so long enough to test with load.
Then if rpm is good then no change of prop required.
There is a prop section on the forum to help further.
Engine HP+load+distribution of load+engine tilt setting+engine cav' plate height setting+prop' dia'/pitch+sponsor(tube)pressure = planing boat :)

Thanks guys! I’m going to order one of those rpm meters. I just found a nice offer for the f-rib 330 is it much different than the 360 ?

According to the info given on the foldablerib.com website, The 330 and 360 are slightly different,
The F330 weighs in at 43Kg and the F360 at 48kg
Tubes are slightly larger on the F360.
Having tillered both the F360 and my F375, I find the f375 to be a little less slammy.
The one i'd love to try out is the F430... I bet that's a beast :busted :clappy
