Not sure I'd get a smartphone just for SafeTrx. For less money than a smartphone you can buy a DSC handheld VHF, or a PLB, both of which are more useful.

You can always text shoreside contacts at the start and end of your trip with a non-smart phone (that's what I do if I'm not using SafeTrx).

:thumbsup You're right Chris, I have a handheld VHS and a Fishfinder/GPS that has a waypoint tracker on it. Always hated the idea of a smartphone anyway. :cheers

If I get a water proof smart phone does that mean if I fall in I can make calls under water????

Interestingly on Friday I tried to text my shore side contacts at the point we turned around and headed back towards the safety of the harbour. My phone in my pocket was very damp, and the touch keyboard would not work until it had dried out. So I could not text or make calls. SafeTrx continued to plot our position though.

So don't rely on being able to use a "smart" phone when the weather starts to get a bit rough and it gets salty water all over it.

That would depend on how smart the smart phonee user is and just how smart the alleged smart phone is too.

When you have an iphone, just ask your secretary “siri” to make the call for you.

I doubt Siri would have heard me over the noise of the howling wind :)

And if she did hear you she would probably just start playing some music or call a random string of numbers.
Not a complete idiot - some parts are missing.
