Avon Searider SR4 - Review

Post by chris moody » 22 Dec 2015, 23:02

So how do you sum up an SR4 in one sentence? "Absolutely the best smiles per pound spent in the ribbing world, a real budget pocket rocket".

There are SR4's to suit every budget from £1000 for a tatty but working boat, up to £6000 + for one in absolutely mint condition with a new engine.

A SR4 handles far better than it should for a 4m boat. The deep V hull gives fantastic seakeeping for it's size, and with a 40hp or 50hp on the back it's good for 34 - 37 knots at Wide Open Throttle. And because the console is lower than most other ribs, that 35 knots feels more like 45 to 50 knots.

The "Rescue" model with the jockey console is ideal for one person, or two at a squeeze, but both people will need to be slim, but the jockeys are ideal for wave jumping and rough water conditions. Some people have been known to extend the jockey seat to make it more comfortable for two people. The Deluxe model has four bucket seats and makes an ideal family boat (and feels even faster as you sit even lower down) and the rearward facing rear seats would be ideal for watching skiers. The bucket seats will limit the rough water handling a bit though.

At anything over 32 knots you will need to be concentrating on your helming as the SR4 will be on the verge of chine walking and trying to throw you out the boat, but it's great fun to do that occasionally.

Would I have another, absolutely.

I’m the same, I love the idea of an SR4, I’d have to have something similar to the deluxe I think as the family enjoy the boat too.

Maybe a project for the future, right now I still like the Frib and what it offers.

It would be interesting to hear others opinions of the SR4 vs newer craft, I don’t think any other manufacturer has pulled off such a man incredible hull - or have they ?

Absolutely yes!
The SR4 is still highly rated even today.
If the rest of the boat is good, have a look at getting the tube repaired/replaced.
