Mariner outboard

Post by JFISHER » 14 Apr 2020, 12:56

Hi all,
New to ribs and sibs,
Got my first question for ya all. Hopefully someone can help :D
I have just purchased and old mariner 25hp 2stroke.
Unfortunately it has no throttle cables from the tiller so I am looking for some cables for it.

I’ve also been told they are a bit of a boggle to fit so I wondered if anyone had a tiller with cables already on it spare for sale in the uk :) struggling to find the true age but the serial plate says:
mariner 25CE
695-S250344
Made in Japan.

Thanks all in advance !

Welcome & that's a good first task to get going on !

I used to have a 25 merc on remotes & changed it to tiller . It was I thin about a 2004 engine .

Merc used to do a kit of parts for the conversion - but are you saying yours has been converted already but you just missing the cables ?

there are various different control arms between remotes & tiller ( is it the one with gear & throttle on the same tiller control ? )

They are also a bugger to set up correctly to get the gear selection to come in before the throttle arms move - but doable with patience !

I'd suggest have a look at the RIBS marine website - they have diagrams of all the merc / mariner engines on there with part numbers & then maybe a call to them to see what they cost !... hard to find used parts unless you are really really lucky.... :(

Welcome aboard JFISHER, glad you’ve found us :wavey

Looks like Peter has kindly jumped in and assisted and to be honest if there’s anything knocking about for your outboard he’d probably have it in his man cave

I used to have the kit to reverse from tiller to remotes. But as is the way..I thought... no one will ever need that..... I'll give it 3 wks before someone posts needing it.. and I've lost it or gifted it at some point...

Thank you both for the welcome appreciate it! And yes peter it has a tiller but no cables at the moment I think it was on remotes left on the back of an unused boat for a while then the bloke I bought it from took the remotes of and stuck an old spare tiller on it. Also it is just the throttle on the tiller, then gear is just a lever on the side. I will have a look around and on the site you suggested found a few sites but most want about £30 a cable and £70 for a tiller as it’s all new stuff.
Thanks again for the help much appreciated !!
