Thanks @ChrisParish really appreciate the offer, i'll drop you a message as that would be very helpful. Sorry for the slow response, been back up north with quite a bit on.

As for the beeping, I think you are right with over temperature, I got back in contact with the previous owner and he said he had the same thing 'a couple years ago' and turned out to be a sticking thermostat, so i'll give that a clean or put a new one in. Back to the boat tuesday so will see then.

Re the engine problems I'm having (beeping from control box and cutting power previously at wot, but now did it on the hose today) :
I've taken out the thermostat and tested in water, opens up freely, closes a bit rough but not terrible so not sure this is the issue anymore. The tell tale on the engine does sometimes come out very hot, almost unable to touch which definitely seems wrong. There does appear to be a reasonable scale build up in the engine having looked in through thermostat hole (picture attached). I think Chris is right and the beeping is over temperature somewhere. Just jump started the boat on the driveway on the hosepipe and ran for a few mins, beeping started even at idle. Previously it only happened after 15ish seconds at WOT. Getting concerned with this issue now, especially since the seller said there were no issues with the boat and it ran fine when I started it at his house.

Any advice appreciated. I intend to get some form of scale remover like salt away or alike to see if this clears any potential restrictions/ blockages. Not sure what else it could be. Cheers

15 seconds is very quick to get an overheat alarm. I also do not think that is much scale in the housing but if the last owner has been in there he probably cleaned it out and it could be worse elsewhere as indicated by your tell tale.

I agree with your plan to put a salt cleaner / de scaler through it. Use max strength possible and flow it through under slight pressure if possible. From the thermostat housing first housing but then also try it back over up the tell tale.

Something is nagging at the back of my mind that I saw on a Dangar marine YTUBE vid.
Before flushing take the plugs out and put them both between TDC and BDC. When you have finished flushing under pressure both ways check the pots for fluid.
If wet head gasket is gone, if dry I am scaring you for nothing.

When we bought our Suzuki 50 we kept getting an overheat alarm.
It turned out to be a result of a couple of different things:

The impeller had been fitted using regular silicon grease and it had traveled around the engine and bunged up some of the smaller passages. We stripped it down and rebuilt the entire head.

There are two temperature sensors, one is used for absolute temperature and the other one is used for rate-of-change. The rate of change sensor input on the ecu was knackered, so we disconnected it having done a load of testing to ensure that we aren’t hiding a genuine fault.

The big problem with used engines is that you never know what has happened to the engine in the past. I have the connectors and software for Honda and Suzuki, but not Mercury / Mariner, sadly.


Still, don’t worry - I’m sure you’ll get to the bottom of it. I suggest that you get an infrared thermometer and then you can measure and see if you really have an overheat problem or a sketchy sensor.

I had the same engine and rate-of-change alarm as Chris and simply swopped the sensors over.

Used Rydlyme to clear out internal scale deposited from river water in the new engine. Really kind to zincs and your skin but boy does limescale fizz away. I doubt Saltaway is as effective.
