Propellor renewal / split pin / cotter pin ???
Hi. I've just taken my propellor off of my yamaha 30hp 2 stroke. I was a bit suprised to fine no castle nut or split pin or any kind of locking washer / nut. I only had a normal nut with a normal washer behind it. Is this normal for this engine? I've tried searching online and youtube but cant find any info about this. If this is normal, once I've replaced with a new prop, do I then just hand tighten it then torque it down? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Jon

I've limited experience here but common sense says where there's a split pin hole there should be a split pin. What does the spindle look like? Does it have one?

As Limecc says , unless it is a one time use nut.
They are a deliberate interference fit on first use only.

Re: Propellor renewal / split pin / cotter pin ???
I cant recall for sure if Yam ever used a non split pin propshaft . Mercury did use a locking washer with tabs that folded over the nut on some of their props shafts.
Id' not be confident of a nyloc or one use nut on a propshaft - given its ability to spin ....! Some props have a shorter / longer hub length that can need spacer / thrust washers which can lead to the pin being out of place on the castellated nut if not spaced properly. So over all its quite probably been 'fudged' in some way

Thanks all for the replies. It looks like there was something bodged in the split pin hole so going to drill out. Have now order a new castle nut, pin and spacer set so going back to doing it properly.

Possible that a mild steel split pin had been used in the past. I've had engines with this and they rust into the shaft. Simple enough to drill out ;)
