Anchoring a 3.5mtr sib

Post by Oldman » 08 Jul 2020, 17:17

So my quest today is to rid myself of the 2mtr of 8mm close link galvanized chain that's gone rusty.
I have a 2.5kg grapnel anchor and 100mtr of suitable rope for inshore fishing.
I'm looking at buying another 3mtr of 8mm galvanized chain (around 1kg/mtr) and use that linked directly to the anchor, its very shallow water where I will be fishing, 2-3mtr at lowest tide on average so I don't want anchor-rope-chain-rope if I can help it or I will be letting a lot of rope out at low water to set the anchor in the mostly sand & clay here.

Ive not had a sib before, but have used grp dinghy's. The idea I gather with sibs is not to have rope rubbing on the tubes, do I intended to have a 2-3mtr painter to the D ring at the pointy end and use something like a snap hook both ends so I can attach the anchor rope with a tied loop at whatever I think is long enough.
The rest of the anchor rope stays in the bucket on board along with the float I usually leave attached to the end.
In theory I pull on the anchor rope from the bucket to bring the painter back to a point where I can retrieve the rest of the rope/chain and anchor.
Is that setup suitable do we think?

That is exactly what I do and it has worked perfectly.
The grapple anchors aren’t great, but with a good length of chain you should be fine.

Have anyone tried the sand/rock bags for sibs and kayaks, There basically a small dry bag with closing top with a draw string, I have one but not got chance to test it yet.
Apparently the hold in rock way better than most steel anchors ?. we got suggested to use 100mtr of 3mm para cord ?

I see if i can add pic on here tomorrow

I used to always drift fish over rocks, saves loosing anchors or breeze blocks ;-)

I have tried to use these a long time ago - but 'tried' is the best word - any form of wind / waves/ current and forget it . They are really for use in lakes in the USA where there are no winds, waves or currents - while the owners sit on the beach and drink beer 3m away.

At best a very very very temporary solution for no more than a 5 min stop in the UK for me .

I have used an old washing bag filled with rocks when anchoring over rocky ground. I was losing anchors on every trip on my kayak. I don’t anchor much in summer. Mainly drifting.

The best anchor for soft ground is the Bruce style anchor. A 2.5kg Bruce will hold a 5m boat in modest conditions without any problem.

The only time I have ever used a weight of any sort was on the Norfolk broads where these is negligible current and the weight just sinks into the mud.

Anchoring on rocky ground is tricky.

I have on occasions had my 2.5kg grapnel fail to set my hard dinghy even with 3mtr of 8mm chain so as they are not expensive and I just ordered new chain, I thought a new 2kg bruce type anchor should be tried, so its ordered.
My new toy the Elling KB350 Should be clearing UK customs around 21/22nd July so I may have it here for last week in July with luck and a fair wind.
