Transform clamp bolt help.....

Post by SibFisherRy » 13 Mar 2019, 14:47

Hi everyone,

I snapped my transform clamp handle, the picture shows the new one i have received. Any ideas on how you use the pin that came with it?????????

i have now loosened my transform clamp bolt and put plenty of white grease on it to prevent this happening again and would advise anyone else to do that!!!

Have never done one but by the look of it you have to pien the end over to lock the pin in position. Or if you have enough room drill the pin & put a split pin through.

As Mitch suggested, the likelihood is that it's intended to be peened (mushroomed out with a ball peen hammer) but that would be a fiddly job in situ and would need some care to do by hand so as not to damage the handle, which as you've found is liable to snap under stress being of cast construction.

Just had a look at mine and they have obviously been concave peened, presumably at the factory using a machine tool. You can buy peening anvils but they're designed for use on bicycle chains so probably wouldn't have wide enough jaws for your need.

One other possible option might be to use a push on fastener if you can get one the right size, but not sure if that would be reliable enough?

Can't think what else to suggest, maybe talk to a local outboard service/repair facility who may have an appropriate tool?
cheers

If you don't want to get into spreading the pin end as discussed the engineering solution is to simply put a small bolt with Nyloc nut in it instead of the pin :) ( stainless of course …. I've been in the same situation ! )

They should be mushroomed over, but If you’re wary of doing such perhaps drill it and pop an R clip in.

I think a small drop nose pin would do the job?
Why am I here - I should be in my boat fishing!!
