Any tech peeps got advise on gopro

Thinking of getting a gopro for when I eventually get out on the sea.
There are so many out there Im a bit confused. What you folks using abd any advise would be great

I have a GoPro hero 6 and a Feiyu WG3 waterproof Gimble. It’s really good and gives lovely smooth footage.
The Gurnard shoots some amazing stuff - one of his videos details what he uses.

I have the GoPro 7 Black and a Hohem iSteady Pro gimble on order. The camera itself is amazing and stabilises video internally, but a gimble has the edge. The software from gopro is not windows 7 friendly. However there are plenty of free editors out there that are.

I shoot video in 1080 HD 60fps. The camera makes a good job of auto exposure and my now aging 8 core pc can just about keep up. 4k is a little more demanding and I'm not sure about the benefit if you don't have a 4k screen to view it on.

Its the first time I've done any video for 20 years or more. I think the Hero 7 Black rocks. The Hero 7 output is vastly superior to the semi-pro £2500.00 shoulder perch/tripod mount camera I had years ago, and its tiny.

Editor wise, Davinci Resolve is incredible and it is free for non-profit use.

Certainly no tech peep here but we have the entry level Hero (2018), bog standard point and shoot with fewer settings to worry about. Probably relates broadly to current Hero 7 White.

Works well for our use and, as above, record at 1080/60fps. No 1 son has all singing/dancing model but rarely records in 4k mode due to heavy memory/battery load.

Although skeptical at first have found voice control very useful and works reliably even over sound of engine running full chat. Internal stabilization pretty good and gives acceptable results even when mounted to boat seat back frame with a cheapo eBay jaws flex clamp. Need a gimble though for pro quality vids.

We use 128gb memory which stores around 8 hrs of video at 1080/60fps.

Here is a bit of unedited footage shot on a Hero 6 Black at 1080p@60fps. Downloaded from the camera to my phone via the GoPro app and then uploaded to YouTube via the YouTube app.
A little bit of colour grading and it would look awesome.

Think I want to keep it simple, but sounds like a gimbal is a good idea.

The feiyu Gimble is pretty cheap and is totally waterproof. I would recommend it.

I've never managed to be able to justify in my head the cost of a 'real' gopro. So have used a Veho version for pretty much all my stuff . I don't use it as much as I should nowadays , but between that & footage of the phone I do think for my limited needs I'd rather spend the money on other things

I hear what you are saying, but over the years I must have spent a small fortune on GoPro clones and in the end I gave up and bought the real thing.
I have found some clones / cheaper cameras to be ok but the thing that lets them down is the low bit rates they run at; resulting in poor quantisation, more blocking and greater colour-space compression.

That said, they can get to 75% of the quality for 25% of the price, so it’s all swings and roundabouts.
