Launching Sites

Post by Tony1267 » 02 Sep 2015, 06:34

Is the general rule you have to get permission to launch and usually pay to use slipways? Is there anywhere you can launch from beach without breaching these rules ? I know North Wales are a bit funny about the above but what about the north east coast etc and the south west?

Regards

Nope, general rule is that unless there is a sign or someone making you pay, you can launch for free.
I launched from Rhyl a few weeks ago from a slip way close the rhyl golf club. No signs, no one to stop you but it's not suitable for trailers either.
I've always worked on the basis that if they are funny about launching it from the slip way I'd deflate, carry it onto the beach and launch from there.
Basically, everywhere in purple (between high tide and low tide in one of these maps (http://www.thecrownestate.co.uk/coastal ... ting/maps/) is crown estate and only they can stop you, unless there's been a grant to allow someone else to use the land e.g. a slipway.

It's easier with SIB's than RIB's as we generally don't have trailers and are much lower powered so don't pose as much of a safety risk to people and swimmers.

However as you've already mentioned some places are a bit funny, North wales in particular. South wales is the total opposite.
What a lot of places do do is restrict your access to the beach in the first place and charge you for the privilege.

Also, if you're wanting to launch somewhere just ask us and someone will probably know where is best or where not to launch from! :)

For Yorkshire and Scunthorpe, Martin and Philpot are your men!
Hopefully they'll be along at some point to add some detail.

i need to find some good spots to launch on the east coast too but having a rib on a trailer makes it more awkward.

Whitby has the nicest slipway, wide, good gradient and accessible for 90% of tidal flow. good parking too. furthest from me to drive too.

Scarborough is ok but the slip is right there for the grockles to gawp as you tallywhacker it up. . shite parking too. :Boxsmile

Northbay, Scarborough is mainly a jet ski thing and very exposed to waves.

Bridlington, nowt in the harbour so you need to do a beach launch further down which depending on the size of boat is most certainly a tractor job. plus can get rough in the surf over the shingle beach.

South landing, Flamborough is a life boat slip so you need permission from the rnli station plus its onto sand strewn with rocks. ok for kayaks and small sibs but owt on a trailer is a reet twat! plus its one hell of a walk back up the hill to the car park at the end of the day.

Filey is direct on to sand so a good tow vehicle is a must plus it being quite a flat beach means a long way out to get depth under the hull to float off the trailer and drop the engine.

all of the above want mucho mulah to launch and park too!! robbing bastards!!

the east coast is moderately poo for launch sites.

with a smaller SIB (2.6-3.2m) ur ok as you can just wheel it about on transom wheels so can technically drop in anywhere but summat wi more beef and, well, it kinda sucks!! :no
If it has t*ts, tyres or floats......it's gonna cost ya!

Hi, I’m new to this. Although I did have a few trips out to sea from North Anglesey a few weeks ago to do some fishing!!!! My question is this. I have a 2.9m rib and a small 4.5 hour outboard. I’m going to Anderby Creek at the weekend and I wondered if there are rules around that area that would prevent me launching off beaches there! I’ve read somewhere that Huttoft beach near Sutton on Sea would be OK? I have made 2 large, wheelbarrow wheels for transporting across the beach to launch. I had those hard plastic small wheels that, tbh were rubbish. Hopefully these will do the job. To be clear. Am I OK to launch my boat off these beaches or indeed anywhere in UK, if I can pull it to launch by myself. Any help and advice would be great. Thanks. Phill
