Small Boats, Big Seas

For those not already seen, and have an hour or so to spare, then this is the story of the 2001 RB4 Challenge, a circumnavigation of the British Isles in 4-metre RIBs.

A bit dated and a slog in parts but still an interesting watch. It’s amazing how little our ribs have changed in nearly 20 years. In fact the little Ribcrafts are still made today.

There was a lad some years ago wanting to go round the UK in an F-Rib 360, :?
We were going to work with him and provide support, then planning suggestions started getting a bit silly/dangerous so we pulled out of it.

It would be a very hard and an extremely long slog in our boats, I love the idea of it, however i think it's way beyoner the ability of FRIB .... :thud

Martin :cheers

Following on from Martin's comment - these things sound an adventure but I wonder at what stage it becomes a chore and a slog - you've committed to it so you'll carry on but the real fun from the adventure has gone?

i couldnt agree more @Sarah i am a relative newcomer but having been out in the solent on one uncomfortable outing with short sharp chop for a couple of hours i didnt enjoy it at all . that said i take my hat off to them . im a bit puzzled by one bit though , when they decided to overnight in whitby ,thus halving that days mileage down to about 130 miles which they said made the 10 days all about the same distance. at the end the total mileage was 1700. did i miss something . 10 times 130 =1300 , good as it was i cant face watching it again :drive

I am a big believer in doing the boating you want to do. I used to do a lot of competitive sailing but the love of sailing disappeared and it became a bit of a chore. Now I still race but when I want to and enjoy it much more. Same with powerboating....I have had to helm a power boat in a force 8 but not something I enjoy. (this was a commercial RIB and not a SIB I hasten to add!) Bit like boats - which boat is the most fun - often our little SIB (although the 4.8 is great fun too) I like the adventure of boating, heading off to somewhere unspoilt. Others enjoy crazier weather, each to their own.
Can't answer the mileage question - I haven't watched it yet but its on the list.
