Advice please for honwave t27 outboard choice

Post by Eddyhark » 11 May 2022, 14:46

Hi all, I'm new to the forum and would be so grateful for a bit of advice.

I've recently bought a new tender, the honwave t27. Its the airfloor version. Its max hp recommendation is 8hp and max motor weight 45kg. With an 8 hp and 10hp both weighing in about the same (40kg more or less) would there be any harm going against their advice in getting the 10hp (and whether you'd choose 2 stroke/ 4 stroke)? It will be on a trailer so there shouldn't be a need to carry the engine separately. My main aim is to have a bit of fun with the boat but also to ferry 2/3 people to and forth my sailing boat which is a fair distance from the slipway.

Anyone with any experience with any of the above?

Hi & welcome!
Honda marine specifically advise not carrying the outboard on your boat on a trailer.
We’ve had many members ignore that advice and their sibs have not suffered any long term effects if supported correctly…
Search the forum for transom savers and towing sibs….

Outboard size and weight..
Older 2 strokes are becoming rare, decent older 2 strokes even more rare.
4 strokes are a little heavier but certainly dropping in weight now especially if buying a single cylinder 4 stroke.
You say you’re looking at the 10hp rather than the 8. The transom should cope with it just fine but you may find insurance issues (if you have insurance) as you’ll be exceeding the manufacturers advised rating.

I’m a little confused over the trailer situation as I thought you’d bought the Honwave as a tender for your sailboat?

Enjoy the forum,
Martin :cheers

We did try 2.7 honwavev with a 15hp Johnson 'gt'' huge fun but not for everyday use.

The difference you'll find between 8 and 10 will be minimal unless your often carrying heavy loads/ people .

New 4 strokes are amazing ( I have one on my t32) but heavy. A decent 2 stroke 9.9 would. Be my choice for less weight. The 2.7 is a very short boat to end up with extra weight on the back . With a 10hp 4 stroke you may end up pointing the bow up to the sky more often than you want .
