Post by LJColeman » 10 Jun 2019, 19:35

Good evening all,

I have joined up here to get some advise and have a general read.

I am new to the work of SIB's but not the boating world, I currently have a Ring 21 powerboat with a yamaha 200 on the back.

However, the Ring is hard work to use on a regular basis & only gets used a handful of times in a fresh water lake.

So, that brings me on to why I'm here. I have a 1 year old son and I thought it would be nice if we could spend a sunny Sunday going up and down a nice river or sitting on a beach,

I have purchased a Boatworld 330 Pro in white, along with a 2000 Yamaha 4hp 2 stroke which I'm in the middle of rebuilding.

I would some advise on where I can use the boat, I am already familiar with Christchurch and mudeford as that's where I used to take the Ring.

Thank you all

Good Evening LJColeman and :welcome to the forum!

If you are familiar with Christchurch then the other logical location is Poole Harbour. Within the harbour a 4hp engine will be more than adequate - I have covered almost every inch of the harbour in a 3.2m zodiac with a 5hp engine during my childhood. At 4hp you are exempt from harbour dues.

You could easily launch from Rockley (the pier on Lake Drive) for just the price of parking, you would have to carry the boat over the beach but your setup should be quite light. That puts you in easy reach of Arne and Wareham. The Wareham river is a great destination - my three year old nephew loves it.

Any more questions, fire away!

Good morning Chris,

Thank you for your reply! :wavey

Poole harbour sounds good, I've been to Poole many times but never in a boating capacity!

Im not familiar with Rockley, Would you be able to circle it & the car park on a map for me if you get chance.. Looks like there is lots of water in & around Poole to have a play on.

I am also in paignton for the week next week on holiday but unsure whether to take the SIB with me or not! Im not sure of many location around Paignton.

My next question is in regards to fuel tanks, At the moment i only have the in-built tank thats on the engine (Not sure how big it is, Maybe 1L?) Will i be okay with just this & a Plastic Jerry can in the boat for refuelling. Or am i better off having a complete external fuel tank.

Thanks again, Lewis.

Lewis

I'd take a 5 litre plastic jerry can, the type with the screw on flexi spout. You can then easily refill the outboards internal tank from that. Does the 4hp use premix fuel or does it have a autolube system? If premix, give the jerry can a good shake before refilling to ensure the 2 stroke oil is well mixed.

Hi Lewis,

There are three low cost / free slipways I know of in Poole.

Rockley
B68A1DEC-2877-46E1-BC35-47762E14B324.jpeg
You can’t wheel a boat to the beach because of bollards (marked red)
Postcode: BH15 4LR

This slip is only really useable if you have a light weight setup, as you will have to carry the boat over a pair of bollards and then some soft sand. It’s still a great location with quite a bit of parking and toilets nearby. If you do have a light setup then I feel this is the best option as you don’t have to cross any of the busy channels to get out into the harbour.

Hamworthy

660406DE-A700-4DB9-9A0C-5553B1DB00AB.jpeg
Direct access to the water with a trailer.
I don’t have a post code for this, sorry.
Very close to Rockley, Hamworthy has the advantage that you can get down to the water with a trailer. The big disadvantage is that it doesn’t have much parking. I’ve never used this myself, but I have watched others using it. On the plus side, it’s free.

Baiter (Harbourside Park)
3212D204-324C-4792-B5A1-78515E5BC9B5.jpeg
The main public slipway for Poole Harbour
BCDDE374-8FF2-463A-88F5-3041EE7684C9.jpeg
an old Sea Plane launch site.
Postcode: BH15 1TQ

Once used for Sea Planes, Baiter is the largest and best equipped public slipway in Poole. It has dedicated vehicle and trailer parking, a wide slip which can take two boats at a time and wash down facilities (bring your own hose). It costs about £15 a day to launch with a trailer.
The slipway here is at quite a shallow angle so you have to be prepared to go a fair way out.

I hope this helps!

Chris

Excellent thank you, it's premix so I'll make sure I give it a good shake first!

That's fanstastic Chris thank you, I think Rockley may well be one of my first options for when the weather improves!

Boat arrived today, very excited to get out on the water now.

Just waiting for my electric pump to arrive & life jacket for my little boy and then we are all set.

I am going to blow the boat up in the garden when the weather improves just to check everything is okay.
