Hello from Peterborough

Post by glentk » 15 Oct 2016, 17:51

Hi, I would just like to say that I have enjoyed your forum for a few months now, so I have decided to join at last. I have just bought an Excel 430HD with a Yamaha 15 hp two stroke engine, planning to use it for fishing off of the north Norfolk coast. Any advice in these areas would be gratefully received! I have always enjoyed sea fishing but I have found that I struggle to cast far enough off a beach, and the thought of balancing on a yac doesn't appeal very much. Hopefully, I will meet up with some of you at a gathering, at some point. :cheers Cheers Glen

Hiya Glen and :welcome to our delightful sib and frib community :drive
From what i've seen of the excels, they really do seem to be a very capable craft and hopefully it'll give you many years of smiles per miles.
We're currently sorting the details of a run around down southern waters at the back end of this month, it'd be great if you could join us and meet some of the members.

Hi there Glen and :welcome aboard matey :)
That's a very well made, seaworthy and capable boat you have there 8-) The Gurnard/Donny on here has a Quicksilver which is almost identical to yours (most likely made in the same factory) which he's used for many years, covering many miles, in various sea conditions during his adventures :drive
Lots of advice and friendly banter on here so please join in as there's no such thing as a 'silly' question :chat
:cheers

Thank you gentlemen, making me feel welcome. I would love to meet up at a gathering with you all. but feel like I need a bit experience, with boat handling etc. I also need to do my vhf course before getting too adventurous. I'll be there next time thanks Glen

Experience with company is probably the best way Glen :drive
We only run at the speed of the slowest boat whether that's through speed or confidence. A VHF isn't necessary if you're out in a group, you'll always have "a buddy" looking out for you.

See how you feel, it'd be great if you decide to join us :cheers

Hi Glen and :welcome aboard, great forum with loads of helpful info and great banter.

As Martin said, if you fancy going out with a group they'll look after you no problem and being with others does give you a lot more confidence as I can testify. :D

I certainly recommend you go ahead and do the VHF SRC course when you can, it is useful and enjoyable, but you don't need to wait until you've done it if you wish to purchase a handheld meantime, as you can licence the handset online to enable the DSC functions without reference to a certificate. In any event you are permitted to use it in an emergency situation even if you haven't been certified (if you see what I mean!) . ;-)

I used to take my little Compass Kudos out on the Norfolk coast many years ago - launched from Hunstanton beach once then realised after a couple of hours on the water that the tide had gone well out, had to lug the boat back across miles of sand!

Look forward to hearing about your adventures.

:cheers
cheers
Roger
