Hi all (no boat, yet)

Post by JonB416 » 17 Jun 2023, 08:11

Hi all,

Brand new to boating. Done various other water sports but never a powered boat.

Will probably get a SIB, but not in a rush. Here to learn what’s best for me and how’s best to go about it all really.

Cheers, Jon.

Hi Jon and Welcome!

Lots of info here, everyone has different needs so there's no such thing as the ideal all round set-up. You're right to come here and do some research to explore the options before rushing into things.

Ask away if you have any specific questions.
cheers
Roger

Thank you.

Initially thinking something to take a family of 5 onto the sea. Wife and 3 kids (will be doing powerboat l2 first) but I’m not sure I can get anything big enough as I really need to get a SIB for storage and transport purposes. Wont often be 5 anyway, probably most 3.

I think I’m in the ball park of a boat 3.6 - 4.2 and engine 10-20hp.
Launch using ransom wheels.

What are you guys thinking please?

Thanks, Jon.

Hi Jon, don't be in any hurry to purchase , do plenty of research and asking questions and advice on here.
Yes, do your PB2 and I would advise VHF and FIRST AID course to see you through your boating experience.
This PB2 course may help you in your search for a vessel suitable for your needs.
And remember you can then advise your crew, who can take over responsibilities especially keeping a 360° look out !
To spot those dolphins etc (and other water users) .

Its great fun and an experience you won't forget so relax , enjoy and stay safe on the water ! x

Cheers dude.

I’m only really expecting to purchase next year, or over winter if second hand. I’ve been first aid trained every 2 years for 25 years now, but great advice. VHF is radio stuff right? That I am not so clued up on! Great advice re the crew’s responsibilities. We get 5 in a small VW camper, so they are used to knowing what to do and when. I’m only aiming for small adventures initially. I’m adventurous but sensible. Plenty time to learn the basics. I’ll keep reading until I know what is best for us.
Thanks, Jon.

Hi Jon
Consider signing up to a Short Range Certificate course for your marine radio license. Course can be done on line or by attendance at a training centre as nd give a good grounding in the correct use of the marine VHF channels.
https://www.rya.org.uk/training/courses ... ourse-srcc

A radio is an essential piece of safety equipment for use at sea and a far more reliable option than a mobile phone. Ideally a DSC version which although more expensive provides a simple one button alert to coastguard/boats within range. Another item of equipment well worth considering is a PLB. These can be purchased for about £250 and provide GPS coordinates via satellite to global rescue centre. These will work even when out of mobile phone coverage or VHF range of other boats. An inshore flare pack is a useful addition to your safety equipment. The costs add up but are a small price in the overall scheme of things.
