Advice needed north wales

Post by Paddymc » 17 Jul 2020, 11:31

Hi all new to this forum and relativly new to boating looking for advice on a couple of things please :sos sorry for all the questions in advance.

I bought a Avon spitfire 4m with alloy deck last year and we have only used it a couple of times on holiday over in the emerald isle with a small outboard. Recently purchased a 15hp 2stroke yamaha and looking to get out and about in the north wales area. Thinking of registering with anglesy reading up seems to be best value and reconised by gwynedd and conway does this sound right??

A little confused with insurance been on craftinsure got a quote in the sib category but there terms are that your craft shall not exceed 25mph 23 knots will my 15hp yamaha push me past this? Maybe 2 or 3 mph at most I assume but will my insurance the be then void?

Finally could anyone point me in the right direction regarding a good launch site for a newbie to boating easy to navagate no strong currents etc. It will be me the wife and 5 year old son and maybe a couple of fishing trips with friends. needing life jackets for us all first if any can be reccomend would be a real help to.
Thanks again

Hi Paddy.
I used to launch off black rock sands as we stopped in a local caravan site there. My boat was registered with Gwynedd council and it does cover the other locations as you rightly say.

15hp and exceeding 23knts.. if you do manage it -it’ll be with a tail wind and a good strong tidal flow. It can be done but highly unlikely so I’d suggest your insurance grouping is correct.

Life jackets...
my very strong advice would be go to a chandlers and try them on. Don’t buy online til you’ve at least tried some.
Then you need to decide whether you want manual, auto or hammar.

Not sure on any safe launch sites to be honest, beach launching is easy on a flat calm sea, introduce waves and wind and it can be a nightmare even for the experienced.

Hopefully someone else can suggest a launch site.

Great to have you onboard, Enjoy the forum.

Martin :cheers
F-RibsAndSibs.Com.... :whistle
Because it's a big old WWworld out there

:cheers :cheers Hi Martin thanks for the advice think I will go with that insurance grouping then. I have looked at black Rock sands seems to come up good on reviews make a day of it on the beach bbq and what not.

A good shout to try before you buy on the life jacket front , so meny on the market I was thinking of going down the auto inflate route to be honest need to do further research on that.

And as you say the nicest place to launch can turn nasty with the weather running in the wrong direction.

Thanks for the welcome Martin

It does that sometime - don’t worry about. I’ve removed the duplicate for you. :cheers
