North Ledaig and Ardmucknish bay

Post by CRF999 » 22 Aug 2023, 12:42

Just had my jaunt up there for 12 days. Mixed weather but got out 5 times.
Saw the falls of Lora , under Connell bridge in full spring ebb. The kayakers were having a great time in the thick of it.
Where you normally run up under the bridge there was a series of 4 standing waves the largest of which was about 4'. I stayed well away from them in the quiet eddy on the North bank.

Used my new Norwegian crab pots without any one nicking them. Could be because i didn't leave them out over night and unobserved. No edibles but 3 keeper Velvet swimmers which are vicious little sods ! tasted OK but it lot of work for the reward.

Lots of mackerel caught on feathers. A few were filleted, brined and smoked very tasty. Most were used as bait catching Spurdogs in the outflow stream near Dunstaffnage marina. Largest was a meter plus and well over 5kg. Sorry no stills as it took some controlling and i did not want a puncture.

One really nice day I did a wee Donny style circuit of Lismore Island. On the far side i came across 3 separate schools of bait fish dimpling the surface as they were pushed up by the mackerel below.

On the last day out not much doing until I came across a sea eagle watching the world go by.
Not very good pictures as i tried to zoom in and had not known it was a crappy interpolated version. Spectacular when he took off easy over 2 m wingspan and a big white tail.

Will try and post a few images.

Thanks for the post and the pictures, I enjoyed them greatly.

Brought back happy memories, I've been there a few times both with the group and solo, staying at Highfield campsite in Benderloch and launching from the slipway at Tralee Bay - one of my favourite places and a fabulous area for sibbing.

Was planning on a trip over in September but our daughter had to postpone her visit up to us in Fife from August to September and no way will I miss spending time with her and our 2 year old grandaughter! Not sure whether I can persuade them to come out on a wee jaunt on the Forth!

Will have to wait and see what weather October brings to the west coast. If you're planning another trip there next year be sure to post it up on here again, might be able to join you sometime.

A fantastic place for sibbers and alike.
Like Roger, and with Roger, I've been there several times and had toured the area.
We used to do an annual meet up there (pre covid) but things change and we've not revisited since.
I've been down as far as Easdale, Up to Tobermory, Round Kerrara and Lismore, Had some fantastic runs up Loch Leven, Loch Etive, Loch Linnhe and Loch Creran. Great places to visit, camp and explore .. Sooo much more to do as and when time allows it.

Keep the pics coming, we love to reminisce

Martin :cheers
