Unseasonable weather.

Post by Stray » 24 Feb 2019, 16:04

With the weather pretending it's spring and the frogs making whoopee in the pond, the F-Rib came out of hibernation. The rib was given a quick spring clean and a new set of copycat Beachmasters fitted.

Because they are much shorter than the old wheels, I fitted a roller to the trolley to make it easier to get the boat on.

So this morning we headed to sea, more for a shakedown run than a serious fishing session. First drop for me resulted in this little feller, the first of the year.

So with great expectation, we fished on, but without any luck at all, then the fog came down.

We continued fishing in the fog for a couple of hours, I had a couple more fish, one keeper, about 3lb, Chris had a couple late on around the 1.5lb mark, that where returned, then we called it a day.
Running back to the beach was fun, I said we must be quite near as I could see a thin line of white water ahead. When I looked to the left I could see a man about 20 yards away, almost parallel with us, he was standing on a spit of sand. Even though we couldn't see the slip, we landed exactly in front of it. The wheels worked well, but I had to put the outboard in shallow drive before we hit the beach.
By the time I'd collected the trolley the fog had lifted.

Nice day out and a little Whiting ! Looks too small to keep, member of the Cod family so great eating if you get one bigger. Basically, if it looks big enough to feed x 2 people, knock it on the head and keep it for the fridge !

Looks like fab day ! :yay

Its a whiting, check out the teeth ?
OK it could be a codling !

But not sure why whiting is off the menu, as much better tasting fish ! Esp the bigger ones !

Nowt wrong with Whiting, I've caught hundreds over the years from the shore. The few that have ended up in the boat have been mostly foul hooked, they don't tend to go for shads and plastics.

Finally a couple of calm days. Had to launch by myself this morning, luckily most of the sand is back so the only problem area is about 5 yds of large pebble at the bottom of the ramp, but a passer by helped overcome the problem. With just a little bit of swell, the launch went without a hitch. The main aim this morning was to do a dit of surveying, as I've just forked out for the Reefmaster chart program and it's throwing up some funny contours with my old data. So with that in mind I headed out to one of our favourite marks and ploughed up and down it, then zig zagged across it for an hour. I then had a go fishing, but with the water so murky I didn't hold out much hope. After another half hour I moved out into deeper water, clarity looked a bit better, and within minutes,

The first real fish of the season, not a record breaker but I didn't mind. With the sea like glass,

I carried on fishing for a couple of hours. Final haul was 6 codling of which I kept 3.
The onshore breeze started to pick up, so I headed in, I was greeted by a couple of ft of surf,

so I waited for the last set wave and followed it in, hopping over the white water after the wave had broke, back on terra firma.

An hours mapping gets you 3000ft x 1000ft of seabed.
