Re: Unseasonable weather.
Seen a few rods go over the side, best was the other year when my mate Chris was fishing 2 rods. He had one of the rods tucked under his bum, just as he stood up to land a Pollock on the other rod, another Pollock hit the lure on the one he'd been sitting on and the whole lot shot over the side. Everytime we fish that spot, (and we fish it regularly) he wonders if his rod is still down there.

Re: Unseasonable weather.
The weather is still being unseasonable and just not playing ball. last nights charts showed a small window to get out and fish this morning, so I was on the beach at 7am to have a look. It was just after high tide (on one of the biggest tides of the year) and it was just too lumpy. So a phone call to Chris to tell him to standdown.
By 10am The tide had ebbed and the swell had dropped, so another call had Chris heading this way. By the time he arrived the boat was ready and we where off. Because of the big tide it had ebbed a long way, so we had to go along the beach a fair way to find firm sand and somewhere to launch.
As we only had a couple of hours we headed to where we'd had fish last time, but it was too coloured, so we headed to deeper water, which wasn't much better.
Chris managed half a dozen codling, only one a keeper and a Mackerel.
I only caught one.

But it was a 15lb Ling.
Beating my previous best fish in the boat, a cod, by 3lb.
Because the tide was still far out and Chris is suffering from a Hernia, and a pulled Hamstring, I took pity on him on the way back.

Re: Unseasonable weather.
Strong winds again this morning, to much to head far out, so we stayed inside under the cliffs for a bit of protection.
Even under the cliffs it was choppy.
The target today was Bass, we tried Trolling and spinning whilst drifting, but it was slow going. If nothing else the scenery is dramatic.
Finally Chris had a take, not the biggest fish but big enough for the pot.

Re: Unseasonable weather.
The weather gods have relented, flat sea, blue sky and no wind, for the next few days.
So we got out this morng and had a good mooch round, nothing spectacular, but we had Cod, Pollock, Bass and pouting in the boat.
Oh and yes, a first for the F-Rib, I had an Octopus.
Same again tomorrow.

Re: Unseasonable weather.
A beautiful sunrise this morning,
I wouldn't normally have seen it, but I'd promised my wife's friend's husband a ride out, and today was the only slot available. He was going to cry off at the last moment because the meterman was calling and his wife works on a Tuesday, so I'd suggusted the dawn raid.
A reef quite close in was our target due to time restraints, plenty of fish where showing, though the fishing was quite slow. We managed several fish between us over a dozen or so drifts and kept three, best a Cod of 5 or 6lb. Then it was time to head back.

Re: Unseasonable weather.
What a difference a day makes, from the sublime conditions yesterday, to the rediculous today.
But it didn't stop us getting some fishing in, we didn't venture too far, Chris managed a few sized codling, then had 10 minutes fishing for Mackerel as we drifted over a decent shoal. All I could get were small codling to a couple of lbs, which where all returned. While Chris was Macky bashing I hit into a nice fish and had it well up in the water, only for line to part. I thought a Knot had given, but the line had been bitten through.
On went another shad and straight down to the bottom, almost instantly I was into another decent fish. The slow heavy nods on the rod gave me an idea of what I'd hooked and sure enough when it surfaced it was a nice Ling knocking on for 10lbs.
Shortly after the wind picked up more and we headed in.
With the winds picking up again, could this be the end of the season?
