Post by goldeneye243 » 26 Sep 2020, 16:08

Just wondering what rods and reels people typically use for fishing from their SIBs...

For use in the SIB I got a couple of Shakespeare Omni 7ft boat rods & a 5ft- ish Kayak rod plus a selection of multiplier reels including a fairly gutsy Okuma Classic XT that was on offer, a nifty little Abu Garcia BlueMax and a cheap little Qunhai.

I don't consider myself a sports angler, I'm only ever after catching something to eat - a few mackies plus maybe the odd codling, nothing too big that would put up a fight.

Strange, I have the Okuma CLX Multiplier reel and a Shakespear Omni rod too...
Did we have a discussion on this subjecty and then all follow someones advice

I'll be honest, I don't know one fish from another apart from Mackies, Gurnard and Cod. That's about my limit :shame
Cheap and cheerful gear for me cos i kinda think a fish doesn't care whether your wearing Mat Allan or Gucci

I tend to use lightweight line, either 19 or 24 lbs with a length of 50lb shock leader on the large reel only, mainly for when I use it from piers or harbours etc rather than the boat.

Any tackle I buy which has triple hooks gets replaced with single and I tend to file the barbs down for easy release. Having once tried to deal with five flapping mackies on a line at once in my small SIB, I now reduce any mackerel feather sets I buy, which tend to come as four or five feathers, to two or three.

My biggest fear is catching anything way too big to handle such as a large skate or octopus - imagine trying to land something like this on a 3.2 m SIB:

Off Fife that would probably tow me to Denmark, or the USA if on the West coast! :eek

As light as you can, though some members think 50lb class is light.

Short rods for me for sea fishing, so much easier to handle. I use a couple of 20lb class shakespeare sigma rods. They have all the grunt I need and coukd easily pull big cod or tooe up to the boat.
