Hopefully nothing wrong with motor at all.
Sounds like it could just be prop ventilating and losing grip on water. If motor trimmed out too far, or mounted too high on transom, prop can momentarily break surface and pull air down causing loss of grip, an increase in revs and no drive. Will occur more in high speed tight turns or choppy water.
Usually trimming down a notch should improve things.

Having experienced the same after a cheeky test prop swap I was going to say exactly what Harrison has said.
How many folk were onboard ?
What was the sea state ?
Any weight aboard if not people ?
What prop size do you have fitted ?
What trim hole were you using ?

The sea was really calm it was fine on way out and I have not changed anything on the boat since I had it and in the end it was doing it at low speed as well took it to the mechanic and he going to test it but has said it cold be a rubber seal round near the prop just glad it made it back as weston got one of the fastest tides otherwise could of be a long row home[emoji23]

The sacrificial sleeve on the prop can strip especialy if you have hit something. This is on modern engines/props. Does sound to me like slip tho.....as if the rubber has stripped it would do it all the time surely??????

You would need a lot of weed around the prop to affect it so badly I would think, Have you checked the prop to see if it's broken the rubber sleeve,

That's me all over, plan something and something always goes wrong
Fingers crossed it's a quick cheap fix
