Launch Wheels

Post by jonw » 24 Jan 2023, 17:17

I have a Honwave 4m, ally deck with a yamaha 30hp two stroke. I'm thinking about getting transom launch wheels but a few people have said not to due to the weight of my set up. Can anyone tell me if it would be ok or am I wasting my time and to just stick with the trailer launch?

Heyt Jon, I just asked whaty boat you've bought on a reply to your 1st post lol, Now i see you have a T40  :shame

Launch wheels will be fine with the T40 Jon, People get mixed up between the T35 and T38 which suffer from a market flooded with cheap crappy Honwave style wheels.
Buy some good sturdy ones and you'll be fine.
Quite a few of the guys have Honwaves so hopefully someone can point you towards a trusted set.

Martin :cheers

Thanks for that Martin. I was thinking something like these. I'm not too sure of the exact weight of mine but thinking these would be good.

Got some like that on my T32. I think they are superb.
Couple of observations though.
You will still find the boat very heavy from the front unless you get some additional support there, i.e. bow wheels / trolley.

Make sure you position them low enough so that they do not foul on the hull, particularly when pushing backwards. There is a certain amount of movement if you get the removable ones.

Whilst good in a straight line I have been very cautious with mine with regard to turning / twisting when in loose sand or shingle. They do flex and are not as strong in torsional use as opposed to tension / compression.

Regards Clive

Thanks for the advice Clive. Are these type of wheels not too robust then? I'm a bit cautios to buy these with my setup ie, 4m honwave alley floor & 30hp Yamaha 2stroke. Not many people have said "go for it", all seem a little reserved about this type of wheel and launch wheels in general because of the size / weight issue.
Regards Jon..

I think they are only rated to 120 kg so that is probably a bit light for a 30hp on a 4m RIB.

I am very pleased with mine and they have performed flawlessly where i have used them.

a) down hill over maram grass sand and small soft shingle up to 50mm cobles.
b) up hill from fine sand shingle to 30mm with waves pounding up the back.

All of these were straight line pulls. It was only during b) before I sorted out front support that i made up my mind to keep maneuvers as straight as possible to avoid disappointment.
It was a long day out the tide was virtually low water so was going to be a 30m pull up a 25 degree slope. Sue was at the front pulling ( no front support then ) I was pushing at the back.
She dragged the front round a bit and semi fell.
The wheels were up to the axles in grit / shingle and i could see them flex a little. the arms are about 25 mm wide by 4mm thick and survived it with no issues. Its just that I made up my mind that they would maybe not stand up to a 90 degree on the spot turn in similar circumstances.
That situation is easy to avoid if you think ahead.

Some of the other fold up / down designs that I saw would do no better.

Hope that helps

there,s a set on evil bay today i was lucky i go a set of swan necks cheap ,but there must be a better design to get over the tabs at the rear i have fitted mine the wheels wobble back and frow. i also use wire and cable ties also r clips so i don lose them over the side , Also when im using the i use a large bungee to pull the bars together as the pin falls out when moving it over sand then when they are in the water trying to get them out of the bracket on the transom i always use white grease gets it done , don't know what type you could use ,always railblazar trolley therse a new one out that might sui your needs
