Trailer

Post by Deford » 28 May 2020, 13:48

Having bought a 20HP Mercury efi at the boat show last year (Against the advice of more learned members here!) I discovered that I can't get the T38ie and the engine in the back of my wifes car at the same time....... (Call me Homer!!)
I have an outside storage bay for my caravan at Chichester, and as the caravan is in Devon, I can use that space to store the Honwave on a trailer with the engine bolted to it for what's left of the summer.
I'm looking at one of the Extreme series trailers, and am torn between the roller type and the bunk variety. Rollers move nice and easy, but don't necessarily give enough support, whilst bunks have a lot of friction when dry.
What is the opinion and experience of those knowledgable folks on here?
Dave

Thanks
That's what I thought until I saw a guy on Youtube in NI with a 3.2 Honwave using a roller trailer. My problem is that I'm also thinking about a Highfield classic 3.8 with console, and I'm not sure if the bunked trailer would suit thealuminium hull.
Currently the boss says no, but who knows.......

Interestingly I spoke to Extreme yesterday about this as I have an XT350 trailer waiting for me in Exeter to collect, with bunks. However I asked them about roller bunks as it was a bit of an effort launching from an older bunked trailer at the weekend.

Extreme advised me strongly against rollers as, unlike a RIB, there is no solid mounting point to attach the winch to when pulling the SIB up the rollers, thus there is a risk of damage and deforming the bow tube and ring. They could have sold me another £350 worth of kit here, but chose to give me the advice not to do it therefore I trust that advice and am now staying with the bunks on both the old and new trailers.

@Deford, whilst rollers would be my preferred choice for a rigid hull, bunks will do both. You’ll have no trouble pulling any of the lightweight rigid hull inflatables onto bunks.

I think that this time I'll take the advice from those that have more experience than myself, and order a bunked trailer.
Does anyone use any sort of lubriacnt to help with any friction issues?

Water. When launching I lower the boat into the water far enough that it floats, and upon recovery I make sure the bunks are wet
Not a complete idiot - some parts are missing.

I've been watching Chris Parish videos on You tube. Very impressive. When I get the trailer sorted, and the engine installed on the Honwave, I look forward to meeting up sometime this summer ; maybe.
I'm sure I saw a clip of C.P lifting his 20hp Yam. He made it look very easy........
