RIBS - Up to and including 4.8m

Post by harrison » 29 Jan 2020, 16:38

As there are now a handful of active members with small ribs over 4.8m how would the collective feel about removing the length cap.

I for one would welcome a Rib Section category where I can legitimately post without feeling ever so slightly guilty.

So, I propose the Rib section be amended to just that, with no mention of length, be it large or small.

Anyone feel they could second this proposal so we can take it too committee.

Keen to hear your thoughts.

I don’t own a SIB or RIB, but I’m still here!

That is all, carry on....

Yup Agree.

Would it make it more interesting to have the different lengths in different sections ?
Eg Up to 4m, 4-5m, 5-6m over 6m ? Just wanna throw that into the ring, but would welcome anyone with a rib.

I think we might be able to adjust the 4.8m thing and make it Small Ribs (small being 60ish HP rather than straight size).

Larger stuff; I think that will have to stay in the Dark Side (although I want to stress that they are welcome here). Martin and I had a chat about this and we want the focus of the forum to remain on the smaller boats.

i only asked the question" will i be banished" innocently not realising that i actually have transgressed,. as has anyone who exceeds whatever the new limit is. .... so what will the new limit be. surely we are all people who like getting on the water, and sharing our experiences, do we actually need a limit. its not for me to say, i absolutely defer to martin and the "management" so , whats the verdict

You haven’t transgressed, Terry! Not in the slightest! We aren’t going to throw anyone out, that’s not how we roll!

Personally I would be happy to simply say “small” ribs and leave it suitably vague. No one is going to think that a 7m rib with 300hp on the back is small, but a 5.5m with a 60? That’s still a small rib in my book.

Most of you know I say things as they are, and not beat about the bush, and I find it a real shame that you cant take up ideas suggested by users of this site. It's a natural progression to go from a sib to a rib, and a shame that most of these users will just go to other sites to chat, rather than stay with "mates" found on this site.

I thought the whole idea of having a forum was for the people that use it ?

I can't for the life of me see why you turned down @harrison terrific idea ? I mean, its not going to make anyone suffer, in fact, it WILL attract more users from other sites. Harrison obviously has some great ideas about how to take this section forward, so why not let him do it ?

At the end of the day, you do what you want to do, its your site, you pay for it, it's just a shame you toss good ideas aside.

Thanks to all who’ve taken time to post, and to @sonny1 who had the balls to second my proposal. :thumbsup

To be fair @Andy we’ve not yet been turned down. @ChrisParish has at least intimated they’ll consider changing it to Small Ribs. As long as this has no hard caveats on length and power, then at the very least I see this as a move in the right direction.

Yeah always good to get new members, and it has been quiet on here recently, but I don’t think relaxing the limits in rib section is going to result in a massive influx of Ribnobbers. These guys have there own well established forum on the other channel, where they happily play hardball and rip the shite out of each other. Hell, we already have more than a few ‘dual nationality’ members who seem quite well mannered.

I fully agree the emphasis here should remain focused on small portable craft. I also understand no one is going to be banished, or asked to leave, due to the size of their dick boat. However, that really doesn’t help existing active members who now have craft which fall slightly foul of the rules.

Yes, we have The Darkside. It’s a great name, it’s fun and a worthy category, but it ain’t the place for members with ribs.

If the management decide it be called Small Ribs then that’s fine with me as that’s exactly what I’ve got.....a small rib.

As an owner of a 4.6m F rib, I haven't got a problem with a "small ribs" section. I have even pondered recently about restoring a 5.4m Avon Searider as an alternative to the 460S. Different beasts though.
What I can't see myself doing is buying a big rib - bigger than 6m+ anyway. I'd probably be going back to yachting if so.... that really is the Dark Side! If it doesn't fit in my garage....
And practically, I think that does make a difference to the mentality. A Sib or Frib can go in the car and small ribs towed behind a normal car , not an SUV. Small every day adventures.
Once you get into 7m+ and 300hp, you're talking big speed and cross channel trips, which somehow doesn't fit into the mini adventures idea. Crossing over to the IOW is a rite of passage in a Sib/Frib but nearly a commercial proposition in a 7.5m Piranha or similar.
Am I not wrong?
