October Photo Competition.........Lighthouse

The Northern Lighthouse Board is 231 years old this year, always a welcome sight if you work on a ship either to keep you away from danger or to signal you're close to home (and the pub).....to kick it off heres one of my lad at the Bell Rock lighthouse we visited (on a fishing trip) during its 200th birthday year in 2010 and it remains the oldest surviving sea washed lighthouse. It was built by Robert Stevenson took three years to build and is 11miles East of Arbroath.

One of my favourite days out Sibbing is Ailsa Craig.
Ten mile open sea crossing from the mainland.
Awsome scenery and massive bird colonies on the volcanic plug, good fishing and cracking walk / scramble to the summit.
Oh and it's got a lighthouse too

Scurdy Ness lighthouse Montrose from my Honwave T38ie quite a swell that day which got worse as the afternoon went on. Was good going in past the lighthouse into calmer water later.

This one is a bit different from the norm as it wasn’t built by a Stevenson ..it was built by A & J Ingles of Glasgow. Nor is it built on land ... as it is built on a ship and was anchored off North Carr reef offshore at Fife .. until 1975.

It has a rather tragic history in that during a terrible storm in December 1959 ..the ship broke adrift from its anchor. The crew of six sent a mayday as the ship was built with no engine because it was permanently anchored on the reef.

Conditions were that bad .. only the lifeboat “Mona” could be launched from the shelter of Broughty Ferry..its home base. Its last radio contact was at 4.48 in the cold dark winter morning..when she said she was struggling to make the North Carr. Sadly..the lifeboat was later discovered capsized and her crew of eight drowned.

The six crew on the lightship managed to re-anchor the ship and were airlifted to safety the following morning

I took this photo a few years back.. while she was berthed in Dundee Harbour.. waiting refurbishment. She may still be there to this day ?

Its not the best photo I have ever taken..but I thought it worth adding to the collection of lighthouses.. and telling its story .. as a remembrance to those who gave their lives to try and save others.
