In the Midwest, around Missouri/Illinois, it's about 30% more but has a basement as a bonus. Austin or Dallas, about 75% more. California, about 200-300% more. Size of home depends on job and how you manage your money. Last I read, Middle class / White collar job in the South and you're in the salary range of $75k to $150k per year and most likely in a house of 2500 to 3500 square-feet, 2-car garage and about 1/3 of an acre. A major factor is with Obamacare. Health insurance that use to cost $300 per month is now $1,500 per month for a family. Depending on job, some companies pay part of it. It's more than most people's mortgages and it continues to go up about 20-30% each year. You have no choice and have to have insurance whether you want it or not. I'm seeing a lot of families having to cut back drastically because of the stupid plan. It's out of control.
As far as ease, my sister in-law and her two brothers, who are great friends of mine, moved up from Mexico when they were in College (Legally and yes, they support Trump because they know the truth instead of what the corrupt media is saying). They got work visa's and then went through to get their citizenship. Been here about 15 years now and doing very well for themselves. BMWs, Mercedes, large homes, etc, upper management positions.

The average price around here is £572 per square foot, thats $714
I'm sure I've done the sums correctly but please check £475,000 buys you 830 square foot
