I use Starmap Pro which was the first paid for app I got when I first bought a smart phone.
It has 2.5 million objects in it's database but you can keep things simple by only displaying the brighter stars as in this screenshot of the Milky Way in the southern sky earlier tonight. Because I was walking the dogs in the city and there was patchy cloud and light pollution, I could not see the Milky Way. In fact I could only make out Deneb, Altair and Vega, which are three of the brightest stars in the sky. I think astronomy apps are brilliant uses for a smartphone, especially on a remote, dark beach
