Transom support

Post by Namibiafrank » 14 Feb 2019, 12:46

Just a quick question if I may?

Where do I support the outboard?
1 block of wood on the trailer frame for the outboard to rest on and strap down.
2 block of wood in between the pins at the top where the engine would normally rest anyway and stap down.

If I put the pin on the last hole my outboard just touch the trailer frame at the bottom
I only travel 15mins down the road.
Any suggestions would be welcome
Thanks frank

Hi Frank,

Either way really, both good.

Personally if only a short (smooth) drive then probably fine just resting on the tilt mechanism. For a bit more reassurance and protection lower motor onto a strategically placed block of wood, then strap down as your second suggestion.

Not mine...pic nicked off inter web as example

Edit; If you’ve enough clearance to tow with motor vertical then simpler to just strap back to trailer to stop bouncing or engage tilt lock if there is one.

Thanks a bunch Harrison, as my thoughts were.
Unfortunately my trailer centre bar is just too high to have the outboard vertical.
smooth I am not sure about going easy maybe, but we will see tomorrow what happen.
The only reason I asked was as the outboard sits on its pins there seems to be a fair amount of moving about, as to when it rest on the bottom it feels planted to the trailer.
With the transom saver you would support from the trailer to the outboard giving the same result, where as on the tilted pins its bouncing a bit too much for my liking.

As Harrison has said, it’s difficult at times to advise what’s best when you can’t see the subject in the flesh.
I’m more in favour of the outboard being as vertical as possible, as the set up is at the moment, could you not notch out the block of wood and allow the skeg to sit in the notch - then tie the whole lot down tight to the steel outrigger?
That way locking all 3 items as one ?

Hey Frank,

Gotta better idea of your set up after seeing the pics and see where you’re coming from now. Thanks.

That’s one long mother of a trailer you have there if the bunks and spine project out to the end of the tubes. You’re probably on the right line to utilise this and use the central trailer member to support outboard leg. As Martin suggested perhaps form a nice deep slot/groove in the timber to locate the skeg, lower into and just strap down.

Should be rock solid. Sorted. :thumbsup
